Tennessee Titans vs New York Jets NFL Week 3 Picks

by Scott Burgess on Tuesday, September 22nd, 2009

The NY Jets are off and running with a 2-0 start after beating the Patriots last week, while the Tennessee Titans haven’t mustered up a win to start their season. The NY Jets play host to the Tennessee Titans, Sunday 27, as the Jets look to advance farther atop the AFC East. NFL oddsmakers at Sportsbook.com have the Jets as -3 point home favs over the Titans with the over/under set at 37 points. The Titans (0-2) lost 31-34 to Houston at home in Week 2. QB Kerry Collins made 21 of 33 passes for 216 yards with two TD’s, but trailing by 3 QB Collins fumbled, giving the ball back to the Texans with 1:32 remaining. A 12-yard run by RB Chris Brown allowed Houston to run out the clock. RB Chris Johnson was lead rusher with two TD’s and 197 yards rushing, while also acting as top receiver with nine catches for 87 yards and a TD. Their offense generates the seventh most total yards a game thanks to their fifth ranked running game, but it’s on defense where they struggle. They are the worst at preventing the pass, but second best against the rush. This will be the fourth consecutive year the Titans have played the Jets but the first time the game has been played at the Meadowlands since 2003, when the Jets outlasted the Titans on a Monday night.  Last year the Jets won 34-13 at LP Field to end the Titans’ 10-game winning streak to begin the season.

The Jets (2-0) shocked the Patriots 16-9 with a home win in Week 2. QB Mark Sanchez is the man in NY; he made 14 of 22 passes for 163 yards with a TD. The Jets defense has been solid behind Rex Ryan's constant blitzes. At times he used six or seven men to rush the passer and was effective enough to throw the Patriots offense off its game. The Jets hurried Brady 15 times and knocked him down another five times. When your defense can shut down your opponents offense, it’s makes it easier for the Jets offense. The Jets defense is already ranked first in total yards allowed and second in points allowed. As for offense they mostly utilize the running game led by RB Thomas Jones, who has two TD’s with 161 yards rushing. Their passing game is good led by WR Jerricho Cotchery’s 10 catches for 177 yards. Jets CB Lito Sheppard left with a quad injury in the first half and did not return.

Recent Trends to Consider:

  • Road team is 5-1 ATS in their last 6 meetings.
  • Titans are 0-5 ATS in their last 5 meetings.
  • Underdog is 5-0 ATS in their last 5 meetings.
  • Jets are 5-1 ATS in their last 6 games following a ATS win.
  • Jets are 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games after allowing less than 90 yards rushing in their previous game.

The Bottom Line: The Jets are all about defense giving time for the Jets to focus on offense. They’ll look to go to the air against the Titans defense.
