Jacksonville (1-1) lost 3-23, on the road, to the NY Jets in Week 2. It was a long day for QB Luke McGown who completed 6 of 19 passes for 59 yards with four interceptions. He was replaced by rookie Blaine Gabbert early in the fourth quarter after posting a dismal 1.8 rating. RB Maurice Jones-Drew had 18 carries for 88 yards. The Jaguars have their third starting quarterback in 15 days. Coach Jack Del Rio named Blaine Gabbert the starter Wednesday, after Del Rio released veteran starter David Garrard after a poor preseason and a three-interception practice. The Jags offensive line should be able to open many wide holes for Maurice Jones-Drew to run threw, but their passing attack, meanwhile, ranks third worst in the league with just 286 yards through 2 games. The game rests largely on the shoulders of Blaine Gabbert and DeAngelo Williams. With both offenses facing sub-par defenses, the x-factors for both teams will be the one who have yet to prove themselves. The Jacksonville quarterback will be making his first NFL start, and the highly-paid Williams will be looking to finally produce.
Carolina (0-2) lost 23-30, at home, to the Green Bay Packers in Week 2. One week after throwing for 422 yards, QB Cam Newton topped himself by throwing for 432 yards and one touchdown. He also ran for a 4-yard score with 37 seconds left to bring Carolina within seven points, but Green Bay recovered the onside kick to seal the victory. WR Steve Smith had a huge game after catching six passes for 156 yards. For the second consecutive week the Panthers lost a starting linebacker and team captain to a season-ending injury when an MRI revealed Monday that Thomas Davis had torn the ACL in his right knee for the third time in less than two years. Davis was placed on injured reserve, joining Pro Bowl middle linebacker Jon Beason, who had surgery last week to repair a torn Achilles. The Panthers lack any semblance of an NFL defense and they have thus far displayed the second worst defense in the league, incapable of either run prevention or pass rushing. But don't go to sleep on the Panthers offense! Expect Cam Newton to pass often — especially if and when the Panthers fall behind big — and make the game close late.
