Green Bay Packers vs St. Louis Rams NFL Week 3 Predictions

by Scott Burgess on Wednesday, September 23rd, 2009

The Green Bay Packers must rebound after Week 2’s loss and the perfect way to do that is hit the road to take on the winless St.Louis Rams, Sunday Sept 27, at Edward Jones Dome. The Rams and Packers have split their last eight meetings, but haven’t met since the 2007 season. NFL oddsmakers at Sportsbetting.com have the Packers as -6.5 point road favs over the Rams with the over/under set at 41.5 points. The Packers (1-1) lost 24-31 to Cincinnati at home in Week 2.  The Packers almost pulled off a final second win, but were victims of poor clock management. QB Aaron Rodgers made 21 of 39 passes for 261 yards with one TD, but fumbled twice. The Packers O-line allowed Rodgers to be sacked six times, something that must change. RB Ryan Grant had 14 carries for 46 yards with a TD, while top WR Donald Driver made six catches for 99 yards with a TD. The Packers offense generated 22 first downs, 13 by passing, five by rushing and made 6 of 13 third down conversions. The Packers will be without stalwart OT Chad Clifton, which is not good news considering they’ve already given up the most sacks in the NFL with 10. QB Rogers is at his best when he has time in the pocket to find receivers. Green Bay's kicker was lousy in the preseason, making just five of 10 field goals. Those struggles have continued into the regular season as he has missed a field goal in each of the first two weeks. Packers WR Greg Jennings was held without a catch for the first time in his career last week, while CB Charles Woodson had his seventh career interception return for a touchdown last week.

The Rams (0-2) lost 7-9 in Washington in Week 2. QB Marc Bulger made 15 of 28 passes for 125 yards with a TD. They scored their first points of the year on a 2-yard touchdown pass from Bulger to WR Laurent Robinson in the second quarter. Robinson finished with six catches for 54 yards, while RB Steven Jackson had 17 carries for 104 yards. The Rams offense generated 14 first downs, nine by passing, three by rushing and made 6 of 12 third down conversions. RB Jackson is the Rams' best offensive player and his ability to create big plays will be a must for the Rams. He’ll have his sights set on a Packers defense that allowed Bengals RB Cedric Benson to run for 141 yards in Week 2. The Rams defense has only one sack in two games, but against a Packers struggling O-line they might get a few in. St. Louis has lost its last five home games and is just 2-14 at the Edward Jones Dome since 2007.

Recent Trends to Consider:

  • Favorite is 5-0 ATS in their last 5 meetings.
  • Over is 4-1 in the last 5 meetings.
  • Packers are 14-5-1 ATS in their last 20 road games.
  • Packers are 8-3 ATS in their last 11 games in September.
  • Packers are 7-3 ATS in their last 10 games as a road favorite.
