Denver Broncos vs Oakland Raiders NFL Week 3 Predictions

by Scott Burgess on Friday, September 25th, 2009

Two AFC East teams go at it, Sunday Sept 27, as the Oakland Raiders play host to the Denver Broncos, who are in first place in the AFC West. The Broncos have won six of the past eight meetings, but Oakland won their last meeting in Denver.  NFL oddsmakers at Sportsbook.com have the Broncos as -1.5 point road favs over the Raiders with the over/under set at 36.5 points. The Broncos (2-0) beat Cleveland 27-6 at home in Week 2. QB Kyle Orton was great making 19 of 37 passes for 263 yards with one TD. Their top RB Correll Buckhalter had nine carries for 76 yards after he ran for a 46 yard TD, while WR Jabar Gaffney made three catches for 82 yards. The Broncos offense generated 25 first downs, 13 by passing, nine by rushing and made 8 of 15 third down conversions. Broncos DE Elvis Dumervil recorded a career-high four sacks and forced a fumble in the third quarter. Dumervil finished with seven tackles. The Broncos' defense resembled the "Orange Crush" of old with their dominating performance against the Browns. Mike Nolan's 3-4 pressured Brady Quinn off the edges and completely disrupted the rhythm of the offense. While the defense was expected to struggle heading into the season, it has grown into a solid unit that is quietly breaking foes through the first two games of the season. Their defense is second best at not giving up a lot of yards, and points, while they are tenth against the pass and rush. .

The Raiders (1-1) won in Kansas City 13-10 in Week 2. QB JaMarcus Russell was anything but great, he made just 7 of 24 passes for 109 yards. He did produce a nine-play, 69-yard drive in 1:31 that set up McFadden's winning score. It was the second straight week Russell had gotten the Raiders into the end zone after trailing late into the game. RB Darren McFadden had 12 carries for 35 yards, while WR Todd Watkins made one catch for 28 yards. The Raiders offense generated 11 first downs, six by passing, three by rushing and made 3 of 13 third down conversions. It was an ugly game if I ever saw one. The Raiders only managed 166 total yards to the Chiefs 409 total yards. The Raiders are using a simplistic approach on defense; they got two turnovers and held the Chiefs to only ten points. With the defense effectively bottling up the run and refusing to allow the deep ball to come into play, the Raiders are conceding yardage, but not giving up points. But they played the Chiefs, not really known for offense. Without much of a pass game the Raiders will want to run the ball early and often to establish their dominance on the line of scrimmage.

Recent Trends to Consider:

  • Road team is 8-3 ATS in their last 11 meetings.
  • Broncos are 1-5 ATS in their last 6 meetings.
  • Underdog is 5-1 ATS in their last 6 meetings.
  • Raiders are 4-0 ATS in their last 4 games as an underdog.
  • Raiders are 4-0 ATS in their last 4 games overall.
  • Raiders are 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games in September.
