Detroit Lions vs Minnesota Vikings 2010 NFL Picks, Odds & Predictions

by Matt Foust on Sunday, September 26th, 2010

Detroit Lions vs Minnesota Vikings 2010 NFL Picks, 2010 NFL Odds & 2010 NFL Predictions: The Vikings and Lions can feel confident about one thing going into today's head-to-head matchup, that being at least one of them will experience its first win of the season while the other falls to 0-3. The two NFC North rivals are scheduled to take the field at the Metrodome at 1:00pm ET; the game will be broadcast live on FOX. 2010 NFL Picks, Odds & Predictions at BetUS.com have Minnesota listed as a -11.5 against the spread home favorite and the Over/Under set at 43.

Lions Breakdown: Detroit's losing ways continued last weekend as the team dropped its home opener 35-32 to the Eagles. Detroit Lions vs Minnesota Vikings 2010 NFL Picks, Odds & PredictionsThe Lions did rally from 18 down in the fourth quarter with two touchdowns, but it proved too little too late. Head Coach Jim Schwartz can at least feel good about his offense, which tallied 444 total yards even with Matthew Stafford on the bench.

Rookie running back Jahvid Best had another strong day carrying the ball 17 times for 78 yards and two scores while leading the team in receptions with nine for 154 yards and one touchdown. Second year tight end Brandon Pettigrew, who suffered through a disspointing, injury plagued rookie season, also showed well, catching seven passes for 108 yards.

Based upon the numbers of Best and Pettigrew, it looks as though backup Shaun Hill will lean heavily on those two while he is under center. As long as the team scores 32 points, no one will complain, but wide out Calvin Johnson, who had four catches for 50 yards and one touchdown, must remain a strong presence if Detroit's offense is to maintain its success long term..

Vikings Breakdown: Minnesota's offense would relish any kind of offensive success, short or long term, after its first two forays this season. The Vikings are 0-2 because Brett Favre and company have found the end zone exactly two times in two games. Favre had a disastrous outing in last Sunday's 14-10 home loss to the Dolphins, throwing three interceptions while also losing a fumble that resulted in a Miami touchdown.

In spite of Favre's miscues, Minnesota still produced 22 first downs and 364 total yards. The Vikings also held the ball over 10 minutes longer than the Dolphins thanks to an Adrian Peterson (28 carries for 145 yards and one score) led ground game that churned out 156 yards on 33 carries.

This is a must win game for both of these squads as they look to keep pace with the undefeated Packers and Bears in the NFC North. An 0-3 start would, most likely, doom either team's playoff chances, particularly the Lions.

Injury Report: (Lions) Cliff Avril (Questionable – knee), Matthew Stafford (Out – shoulder), Nate Buleson (Out – ankle). (Vikings)CedricGriffin (Questionable – knee), Brett Favre (Probable – ankle, elbow), Ben Leber (Probable – back), Bernard Berrian (Probable – knee), Percy Harvin (Probable – hip, migraine).

NFL Picks Betting Trend: The Lions are 1-14 straight up over the last five years playing as a road dog of +10 or more; however, they are 9-4-2 against the spread in those same contests.
