NFL Week 4 Predictions: The first quarter of the 2009 NFL season is rapidly approaching an end as week 4 action is just a few days away. While three or four games is not a crystal ball for determining how the rest of the year will play out, it certainly makes the picture a little clearer. With that in mind, there are several key matchups this weekend, including San Diego vs Pittsburgh, Baltimore vs New England, New York (Jets) vs New Orleans, and Green Bay vs Minnesota. Their defense appears to be The New Orleans Saints have looked like the best team in the league thus far, averaging 40 points per contest while giving up 18.7. They got an easy home win over the Lions to open the season, but have since got Northeast road wins over Philadelphia and Buffalo. New Orleans offensive prowess is a surprise to no one, but their defensive effort to this point has raised some eyebrows. The hire of Greg Williams as defensive coordinator has certainly paid dividends through three games. The unit is allowing 28 fewer yards, 5.9 fewer points, and 49 fewer rush yards per game than a season ago. The New York Jets have got whatever message Rex Ryan is preaching. This team obviously had some talent, finishing 9-7 last year, but their 3-0 start has been unexpected to say the least. The win at home over New England grabbed everyone's attention, but it was not as impressive in the eyes of some simply because the Pats, and Tom Brady, still appear to be finding their way. However, Sunday's win over the Titans confirmed this team is absolutely for real. Tennessee, despite their record, is a quality team and they came into the Meadowlands desperate for a win and could not get it. The offense, led by rookie signal caller Mark Sanchez, is efficient while the defense is downright stingy in Ryan's attacking scheme. All of these teams have big tests this weekend, two of them against each other. If Baltimore can beat the Patriots in New England, they become the early favorite in the AFC to reach the Super Bowl. The Saints will pose the Jets toughest challenge to date, and that is saying something considering New York has played some pretty stiff competition thus far. This game will say more about the winner as both teams have already proven themselves to be more than pedestrian units. the same stalwart group that has patrolled the field for years and their offense looks like it has finally caught up. John Harbaugh's squad is averaging 34.3 points per game in the early going while giving up just 17.7. They also are posting 147.6 more yards per game than their opposition. All of that points to a team headed straight to the playoffs. The only fly in this ointment is the fact that the Ravens have posted those numbers against two of the worst teams in the league in Kansas City and Cleveland. Their one win against a quality opponent came on the road in San Diego, which has proven over the past few seasons to be an inconsistent regular season team.
