Carolina (1-2) beat the Jacksonville Jaguars 16-10, at home, in Week 3. QB Cam Newton found Greg Olsen over the middle for a 16-yard touchdown pass with 4:20 left to seal the win. Newton had thrown for more than 400 yards in each of his first two games, setting an NFL record with 854 passing yards in the first two games of his career. He finished with just 158 yards on 18-for-34 passing against the Jaguars. The players and staff around Newton, such as TE Greg Olsen, receiver Steve Smith and coach Ron Rivera, have made Newton's transition to the pros that much easier. Newton brings the league’s fourth-best passing offense to Soldier Field on Sunday with an average of 356.7 passing yards per contest. Chicago's defense had no problem handling Panthers quarterbacks Jimmy Clausen and Matt Moore in that game, but Newton could present a bigger challenge. His 1,012 passing yards are good for third in the NFL.Steve Smith's 349 receiving yards also rank third. This will be his first game in Chicago since Smith torched the Bears for a career-high 218 yards and two TDs during a 29-21 win in the 2006 playoffs. That victory is the Panthers' only one in three all-time trips to Soldier Field.
Chicago (1-2) lost 17-27, at home, to the Green Bay Packers in Week 3. QB Jay Cutler struggled in a big way and their running game was nonexistent again as Chicago dropped its second straight after an impressive win over Atlanta. QB Cutler completed 21 of 37 for 302 yards with two touchdowns. The Bears managed just 13 yards rushing. And with 12 attempts, they matched their second fewest for the second straight game. RB Matt Forte had just 2 yards on nine runs — or less than a quarter of a yard per attempt. Cam Newton is going to be pressured by one of the best in the buiz, Julius Peppers. In three games this season, Peppers has registered decent numbers — two sacks and 11 quarterback pressures. The Bears occasionally move him around, doing anything from being an interior lineman to dropping into coverage against a running back. This will be the second time the Panthers and Bears have met since Peppers' departure. He was revved up that first time, theatrically shushing the Panthers crowd after a big play last season. The Bears enter this game ranked 31st with 53.7 rushing yards per game and tied for the most sacks allowed with 14. Injuries to tackle Gabe Carimi (knee), the team's top pick in this year's draft, and guard Lance Louis (ankle) haven't helped.
