The Cardinals (2-1) beat Oakland 24-23 at home. QB Derek Anderson completed 12 of 26 for 122 yards with two TD’s and an interception. Their top RB Beanie Wells had 14 carries for 75 yards, while WR Steve Breaston and Larry Fitzgerald each added a TD. Their defense got three sacks and an interception on the day. On a bad note they gave up 231 pass yards, to the Raiders! Even with Anderson’s struggles, WR Larry Fitzgerald is the biggest challenge for Chargers CB’s Quentin Jammer and Antione Cason. Figure Fitzgerald will be lined up against both plenty, but it is Cason who teams continue to target, and he is more capable of making a game-changing play than Jammer, who is consistent but doesn’t make many interceptions. Anderson hit Larry Fitzgerald on just 12 of 34 attempts. Past production indicates that’s not Fitzgerald’s fault. Anderson is perhaps in danger of being benched, as he has completed just more than half his passes with three interceptions and three touchdowns. At least a couple of the missed throws would have gone for touchdowns. The big play is likely Arizona’s best chance, but the Cardinals haven’t shown they still have that capability on a regular basis. Arizona struggled to win at St. Louis and got routed at Atlanta this season.
The Chargers (1-2) lost in Seattle 20-27. QB Phillip Rivers had a huge day after completing 29 of 53 passes for 455 yards with two TD’s, but two interceptions. RB’s Michael Tolbert and Darren Sproles only managed 89 yards rushing, but it was all in the air for the Chargers offense. WR Antonio Gates made seven catches for 109 yards with a TD, while WR Malcom Floyd had six for 97 with a TD. The Chargers offense fumbled three times which cost them dearly. Despite the NFL’s top-ranked offense (461.3 yds/game) and fourth-ranked defense, the Chargers are 1-2 for the third time in four years under Turner. It has been giveaways (five fumbles, four interceptions) and special teams breakdowns (three returns for touchdowns) that have doomed the Chargers. Ryan Mathews will likely return for the Chargers after missing a week with a sprained ankle. As long as they don’t put themselves in another ridiculous hole, the Chargers would love to rely on Mathews and Mike Tolbert (averaging 4.8 yards a carry between them) facing the league’s 31st-ranked rush defense. At home they are less likely to make the type of killer mistakes that cost them in their two losses , the Chargers look to be a superior team. Their offense has mostly stopped itself, and the defense has been mostly stout. The Chargers have won six straight at home and are 19-6 at Qualcomm Stadium under Norv Turner.
