NFL Week 5 Odds 2011: There are two, 4-0, undefeated teams in the NFL, both can be found in the NFC North: the surprising Detroit Lions and the defending champion, Green Bay Packers. Understandably, one of these two teams is getting all the attention from the media after 4 NFL Weeks, but it’s not the one you would expect.
Despite being the defending champs, everyone wants to talk about the Lions and the Decepticons! But what about the great start the Packers have gotten off to? Why does everyone ignore Aaron Rodgers’ almost perfect start in his first title-defense? What everyone doesn’t realize is that by taking all the attention away from Green Bay, allows that team to play with more freedom and less drama.
This week, the NFL Point Spreads favorite (4-0) Green Bay Packers [-6] will look to remain perfect on the season, as they take on an (2-2) Atlanta Falcons [+6] team struggling to find its rhythm early on. So why have the Packers, sort or, flown under the radar after 4 Weeks of NFL action in the books? I’ll tell you one thing: it ain’t for a lack of offensive statistics!
Going into Week 5, the Packers offense is in the top-5 in both total offense (5th best with 429.2 typg) and passing yards (319.8 pypg). When it comes to rushing, Green Bay is ranked 15th in the league with 109.5 yards per game. As a result, Rodgers is currently fourth in the league in passing yards per contest (1,325), is second (12 TDs) in touchdowns only behind Tom Brady (13), leads all QB’s with a 124.6 rating, and is tied for second with the least amount of interceptions thrown (2).
So why hasn’t Green Bay gotten the credit it deserves early on? Well, there’s an answer for that too! The Packers defense is currently one of the worst in the league, which is shocking considering the way they have manhandled teams thus far. But let’s take a closer look at the defensive numbers. Leading into the NFL Week 5 Odds 2011, the Packers defense ranks: 28th in the league in total yards allowed per game (406.8) and a shocking 31st in the NFL in passing yards allowed (335.8). The two statistics that have allowed Green Bay to remain unbeaten this season have been the defense’s ability to stop the run — 2nd in the NFL at 71 rypg — and preventing opponents from running up the score on them, which is not spectacular either — 18th best at 24.2 ppg.
