NFL Week 5 Odds & NFL Picks: The NFL season is a quarter of the way through and there are five teams that have yet to lose a game. Of all the unbeaten squads, the Denver Broncos have the most difficult challenge this week as they take on a battle tested 3-1 Patriots squad at Mile High Stadium. With week five just around the corner, let's take a look at which of these teams has the opportunity to carry their
unblemished record the furthest.
Denver Broncos: Josh McDaniels' club is presently listed as a +3 home underdog in this weekend's meeting with the Patriots. They were pegged as the same in Sunday's win over the Cowboys. Does this team have what it takes to move to 5-0 or will they be the first to fall? In their favor will be a pumped up home crowd and a defense that looks to be the real deal. If they can shut down New England's ground game and put the same kind of pressure on Tom Brady that they have put on every other quarterback they have faced this season, then there is no reason they cannot win this game. Why might they be the first to slip up? Kyle Orton is prone to the turnover and if the Pats defense can stop Knowshon Moreno, that might put too much pressure on the former Boilermaker.
If they do survive New England, the road does not get much easier. The collective record of their remaining competition, which includes the likes of the Giants, Colts, Eagles, Steelers, Chargers (twice), and Ravens, is 25-22.
Indianapolis Colts: Peyton Manning and company are listed as a 3.5 point road favorite in this Sunday's showdown with Tennessee. If the Titans were not desperate against the Jets and the Jags, they most certainly will be against Indy. However, does it really matter how desperate Tennessee is? Probably not. While, despite their 0-4 record, they have the kind of talent to upset the Colts, they probably lack the confidence at this point. Signs point toward Indy being 5-0. Including the Titans, Indianapolis' remaining opposition sports a record of 23-25. They have meetings against the Niners, Pats, Broncos, Jets, and Ravens on their schedule; however, all of those games are at Lucas Oil Stadium with the exception of the Baltimore contest.
New York Giants: Eli Manning injured his foot in Sunday's win over the Chiefs and it is uncertain if he will play this week. What is certain, though, is that it will not matter. Tom Coughlin could lineup under center this weekend and New York would still put a beating on Oakland (+16). That said, the Giants definitely need Manning in the lineup for the season to be the kind of success that most people are envisioning. New York's schedule has some definite landmines, the most notable being a date with the Saints on October 18th in New Orleans. Coughlin's troops also have the Eagles (twice), Cowboys, Broncos, Falcons, Cardinals, and Vikings (collective opponent's record 26-17).
Minnesota Vikings: The Vikes and their new, old quarterback looked pretty ferocious last night, putting away the Packers with relative ease. They catch a break this week as they travel to St. Louis to take on the Rams. However, things get much tougher after that. Following St. Louis, they host Baltimore and then hit the road to take on Pittsburgh and Green Bay. Minnesota also faces Chicago (twice), Arizona, Cincinnati (who would have thought?), and the Giants. This team has the make-up to be in every contest, though, regardless of location. A defense that stops the run and gets after the quarterback coupled with the league's best running back and a Hall of Fame quarterback will go a long way.
New Orleans Saints: Sean Payton's squad is idle this week, which, naturally, gives them the upper hand in this race. What also gives them the upper hand is the fact that their remaining opposition is a combined 16-28, by far the worst percentage that any of the five unbeaten teams faces. Yes, the big meeting with the Giants looms on the horizon, and there are also games against Atlanta (two), New England, and Dallas, but three of those four contests are at the Superdome. A win over New York, and this team has some serious momentum heading into the middle and later portion of the schedule.
So, which team is the most likely to survive the longest? The Colts get the nod due to the fact that they have the least imposing slate of games over the next few weeks. However, New Orleans should finish with the best overall record. The most likely to miss the post-season? That would be the Broncos. Not because they are not a quality football team, but because they have a ridiculous schedule. Denver faces New England, Baltimore, San Diego, and Pittsburgh…all in the next four weeks. The back half of their docket includes games against the Giants, Colts, Chargers, and Eagles. They could easily fall to 8-8 or 9-7 and miss out on the playoffs.
