Tampa Bay (3-1, 1-0 V) beat the Indianapolis Colts 24-17, at home, in Week 4. QB Josh Freeman threw for 287 yards and a touchdown, while RB LaGarrette Blount ran for 127 yards and a score. Tampa Bay's biggest problem of the game — aside from giving up the two long TD passes — was penalties. The Buccaneers were flagged 14 times for 106 yards. The Bucs have won nine of their past 12 road games heading into Sunday's matchup at Candlestick Park. Few quarterbacks have been more efficient on third down this year than Freeman, who has made a habit of getting everyone involved. Last season, Freeman threw most often to TE Kellen Winslow and rookie WR Mike Williams on third downs, but his favorite targets in the clutch this season are slot receiver Preston Parker and veteran RB Earnest Graham. Parker is ranked second in the NFL behind Saints RB Darren Sproles in third-down receptions with 10, while Graham is tied for third with eight. All but six of Parker's pass receptions have come on third down and his lone touchdown, a 13-yard pass from Freeman against the Colts, came on a third-down play.
San Francisco (3-1, 1-1 H) got past the Philadelphia Eagles 24-23, on the road, in Week 4. The much-maligned QB Alex Smith went 13-for-17 for 201 yards in the second half, with TD passes of 30 yards to Joshua Morgan and 9 to Vernon Davis. Then RB Frank Gore and former Eagles kicker David Akers converted the decisive extra point. Smith completed 21 of 33 passes for 291 yards with two touchdowns and Gore had 15 carries for 127 yards and a touchdown. Tampa Bay's special teams have excelled this season and the Bucs face another powerful unit Sunday. San Francisco's Andy Lee is one of the NFL's premier punters and five-time Pro Bowl K David Akers has provided consistency since being signed as a free agent from Philadelphia this summer. Ted Ginn Jr. averages 34.3 yards per kickoff return and has taken both a kickoff and a punt back for scores. The Niners have now come from behind to win two straight games on the road. The chief beneficiary was Coach Jim Harbaugh, who had been criticized frequently for a conservative offense, even as the 49ers won two of their first three games. Harbaugh and offensive coordinator Greg Roman opened up the offense in the second half, letting Alex Smith throw downfield, and Smith torched the highly rated Eagles secondary, throwing for two touchdowns and setting up a third, a 12-yard run by Frank Gore.
