Eagles vs Redskins Spreads 2011 NFL Predictions Week 6: The refreshed Washington Redskins host the struggling Philadelphia Eagles, Sunday Oct 16th, as the Eagles try to avoid dropping four straight. The Eagles won their last meeting 59-28, on the road, in 2010, but the Skins won their earlier meeting 17-12, on the road. NFL oddsmakers have the Eagles as slim -1 point road favorites over the Redskins with the over/under set at 47.5 points. Philadelphia (1-4, 1-2 V) lost to Buffalo 24-31, on the road, in Week 5. QB Vick went 26 of 40 for 315 yards passing and two touchdowns, but was undone by a career-worst four interceptions. He added 90 yards rushing to pass Randall Cunningham for most career rushing yards by an NFL quarterback. LeSean McCoy scored on a 10-yard run, while DeSean Jackson scored on a 31-yard catch and Jeremy Maclin added a 10-yard TD catch. Vick has seven interceptions on the season. The Eagles have neither the personnel nor the defensive coordinator to make the wide nine scheme work effectively for four quarters. Sure, there have been glimpses of the kind of pressure the wide nine can generate for this defense. But each week the run totals top 100 yards as running backs zip through huge gaps as wide as Andy Reid's waist. Each week opposing offenses script and execute plays designed to exploit the wide nine. And each week the sack numbers decrease. And yet, Reid said Monday following the Eagles' fourth straight loss he's sticking with the wide nine. So be it. "You obviously saw it work in the second half very effectively," Reid said. "We've just got to continue to work with it. Listen, anything new you've got to work with and work out the wrinkles and get it right. "Players, they have to learn it, coaches have to learn it, particularly the new coaches. So it's a joint effort there." The wide nine, in theory, can work quite splendidly. But you need two components: Defensive ends who torpedo past tackles, and linebackers and safeties who can fend off blockers, fill run-gap responsibilities and make tackles.
Washington (3-1, 2-0 H) was on their bye week in Week 5. In Week 4 they beat St.Louis 17-10, on the road. QB Rex Grossman completed 15 of 29 passes for 143 yards with a touchdown. RB Ryan Torain ran for 135 yards and a 20-yard score. The Redskins dominated on defense and got two of their six sacks late by Stephen Bowen and Brian Orakpo. Through four games Rex Grossman had seven turnovers compared to six touchdown passes. He made some exceptional throws, but countered those with some baffling decisions. Failure to clearly see the field resulted in interceptions against Dallas and St. Louis. His longtime ball-security problem was an issue on fumbles against New York and Dallas. With Grossman under center, the Redskins have to take the good with the bad. That will result in some tense finishes. It also puts immense pressure on the defense, and there will be times, such as the Dallas loss, when it can’t bail the offense out. The Redskins are the least penalized offense in the NFL with 20 penalties, but their defense ranks 21st though in penalties, so still some work to do there. Their Redskins defense is #1 in forced fumbles (14) and Coach Shanahan is 10-5 all-time of a BYE week (Good not great. Of course last year the Monday Night Massacre was after the BYE week).
