San Francisco (4-1, 2-0 V) pounded the Tampa Bay Buccaneers 48-3, at home, in Week 5 for their best start in nine years. QB Alex Smith threw two of his three touchdown passes to TE Vernon Davis, and RB Frank Gore ran for a score in his second consecutive 100-yard rushing game. Smith made his mark this time, going 11 for 19 for 170 yards and no sacks or interceptions before giving way to rookie backup Colin Kaepernick midway through the fourth. A well-balanced offense ran and passed so successfully that the 49ers only had to punt once. The chief beneficiary of Harbaugh’s coaching has been quarterback Alex Smith, who has always had the skills to be an excellent quarterback, but never before had a head coach who understood quarterbacks. Smith is playing under control, with only one interception in five games. The Niners are working out former Baltimore Ravens wide receiver T.J. Houshmandzadeh today, according to a league source. Houshmandzadeh played last season for the Ravens, but wasn't retained. Houshmandzadeh, 33, has caught 616 career passes for 7,091 yards and 43 touchdowns. The California native insists there's plenty left in his tank.  "I'm so eager to show people what I can do because I feel really good right now," Houshmandzadeh said. "Last year at this time, I was rehabbing from my fourth hernia surgery and I was trying to manage the hernia. Now, I'm able to really work out and do explosive things."

Detroit (5-0, 2-0 H) got a 24-13 victory over the rival Chicago Bears, at home, in Week 5. QB Matt Stafford was 19 of 26 for 219 yards with two TDs, including the go-ahead score to Brandon Pettigrew in the third quarter. RB Jahvid Best more than doubled his previous career-high with 163 yards rushing on 12 carries. WR Calvin Johnson finished with five catches for 130 yards and for the first time this season, he didn't score twice, but he made an impact as usual against a team that tried to slow him down with double coverage. The Lions have been able to mask their lack of run game thus far, but that’s about to change. Jahvid Best is going to get eaten alive against a ferocious 49ers front four that ranks fourth in the league against the rush. Conversely, Frank Gore and Kendall Hunter have turned into a terrific two-headed monster in a backfield averaging 117 yards a game. The Niners can control the clock with the ground attack and more importantly…keep QB Matthew Stafford and WR Calvin Johnson off the field. That’s the big key for the game. Keeping the dynamic duo on the sideline will keep the score low and 49ers QB Alex Smith won’t be forced into a shootout—something he’s incapable of doing. Get $50 in Free NFL Picks here.
