The winless Tampa Bay Buccaneers play host to the Carolina Panthers, Sunday Oct 18, in a battle of the NFC South. The two teams have split their last four meetings,  but Carolina won their last meeting 38-23 at home. NFL oddsmakers at Sportsbetting.com have the Panthers as -3 point road favs over the Buccaneers with the over/under set at 39 points . The Panthers (1-3) beat Washington 20-17 at home in Week 5 and now sit third in the NFC South. QB Jake Delhomme made 16 of 25 passes for 181 yards with one TD pass and an interception; overall he’s thrown for 782 yards with three TD passes and eight interceptions. Their top RB DeAngelo Williams had 18 carries for 40 yards, while RB Jonathan Stewart had 10 carries for 39 yards and a TD. Stewart is listed as probable for Sunday’s battle. Their top WR Steve Smith made five catches for 65 yards, while TE Jeff King added a TD. A season ago, RB DeAngelo Williams rushed for 1,515 yards and scored 20 touchdowns. He has not found that form so far this year and is averaging just 3.7 yards per carry with only two touchdowns. This Sunday will give DeAngelo Williams perhaps his best chance to breakout as he faces a Bucs team he ran for a career-high 186 yards against last season. The Bucs defense is ranked 28th against the rush and 20th against the pass. As for the Panthers so called offense, their passing game ranks 23rd and their running game sits ranked 26th.  RB Derrick Ward had a career-high 215 rushing yards on 15 attempts (14.3 yard average) in his last game against the Panthers. The Panthers average 14.2ppg and give up 26ppg, while they average 13.5ppg on the road and allow 24.5ppg. They are 0-4 ATS and 2-2 over/under.

The Bucs (0-5) lost in Philadelphia 14-33 in Week 5 and still sit dead last in the NFC South. QB Josh Johnson made 26 of 50 passes for 240 yards with two TD passes and three interceptions; overall he’s thrown for 382 yards with three TD passes and four interceptions in three games. Their top rusher was QB Johnson with five carries for 40 yards, while TE Kellen Winslow made nine catches for 102 yards and two TD’s.  The Bucs aren’t going to be able to pass the ball against the league’s second best pass defense , they’ll have to pick apart the Panthers 30th ranked rush defense. Julius Peppers has struggled through the first three week’s with one sack. In last week's win over the Redskins, Peppers had his best game of the season, tallying two sacks and contributing to a safety. The Panthers will need him at his best as they try to contend with fleet Bucs QB Josh Johnson.  QB Jake Delhomme is 8-2 in 10 career starts against the Buccaneers. WR Steve Smith averages 85.8 receiving yards per game, which is the most in the NFL. The Bucs average 13.6ppg and give up 28ppg, while averaging 10.5ppg at home and allow 29ppg. They are 1-4 ATS and 3-2 over/under.

The Bottom Line: The Panthers are just a tiny bit better; Delhomme must stop throwing interceptions if they want to win.
