Dallas Cowboys vs St Louis Rams NFL Week 7 Picks

by Scott Burgess on Friday, October 17th, 2008

Three weeks ago the Cowboys were the toast of the NFL. But two losses, a few injuries, a major trade and an indefinite suspension have put Dallas' Super Bowl reservation on hold. But the good news is the Dallas Cowboys (4-2) hit the road to take on the struggling St.Louis Rams (1-4), Sunday October 19, at Edward Jones Dome. NFL oddsmakers at SBGglobal.com have the Cowboys as -7 point road favorites over the Rams with the over/under listed at 43 ½ points. The Cowboys have lost two of their last three games, they lost QB Tony Romo to a broken pinkie finger, CB Adam Jones has been suspended, their without their best field goal kicker Mat McBriar and newly acquired WR Roy Williams will be tested to the max. The Cowboys most recent loss was in Week 6 when they lost on the road to the Cardinals 24-30. QB Tony Romo made 24 of 39 passes for 321 yards with three touchdown passes. He’ll be replaced by backup QB Brad Johnson who hasn't played meaningful minutes in two seasons, and hasn't played well in three seasons. For a team that has the third best passing game, I don’t see them passing with a quarterback that threw up 15 interceptions in his last season with Minnesota. WR Terrell Owens wants the majority of passes to come his way or he gets pissy, new WR Roy Williams is a threat to Owens while TE Jason Witten wants his share of passes as well. It’s going to be a gong show if things don’t go well! They’ll go with their running game that had RB Marion Barber lead his team with six touchdowns and 440 yards rushing under his belt. The Cowboys are 2-4 ATS and 4-2 over/under.

The Rams got their first win over the Redskins, who just beat Dallas, 19-17 on the road. QB Mark Bulger made 15 of 26 passes for 136 yards; he has two touchdown passes for 655 yards along with two interceptions. RB Steven Jackson was their top rusher with 22 carries for 79 yards while WR Donnie Avery had 4 catches for 73 yards. The Rams are averaging 12.4 ppg and they give up an average 32.8 ppg. They are 0-2 SU at home where they’ve averaged 13.5 ppg and given up 36 ppg. The Rams overall offense is ranked 31st averaging 237 yards a game, their 29th ranked running game averages 82 yards per-game. They have a passing game that averages a 28th ranked 155 yards a game. They’re weak on defense with a 31sty ranked total defense that allows 403 yards a game, they have a 26th ranked pass defense that allows a 234 yards per-game. They are ranked 30th at stopping the rush allowing an average 169 yards a game. The Rams are 1-4 ATS and 3-2 over/under.

Recent Trends to Consider:

  • Cowboys are 2-9 ATS in their last 11 games overall.
  • Cowboys are 1-6 ATS in their last 7 games following a ATS loss.
  • Cowboys are 1-8 ATS in their last 9 vs. NFC.
  • Rams are 7-3 ATS in their last 10 games following a S.U. win.
  • Over is 4-1 in Cowboys last 5 games overall.
  • Over is 5-0 in Rams last 5 home games.

The Bottom Line: Call me crazy, but after the Rams beat out the Redskins I think they’ll be pumped playing at home against a disheveled Dallas team. QB Brad Johnson hasn’t been tested in years.
