A
tlanta (3-3, 1-2 V) got a 31-17, road win, over the Carolina Panthers in Week 6. RB Michael Turner ran for 139 yards and two touchdowns, QB Matt Ryan completed 14 of 22 for 163 yards in a performance that looked more like the Atlanta teams of the last three seasons. Corey Peters came up with a huge interception that helped the Falcons seal the win. Beating the 1-5 Panthers isn't that huge of an accomplishment, but getting a win in the division combined with a loss by the Saints pulls them to within a game of the NFC South lead. The Falcons have yet to beat a team with a winning record this season. The Falcons seemed to re-commit themselves to the run in Week 6 with Michael Turner rushing for 139 yards on 27 carries so a ball-control game like the Niners played on Detroit isn’t out of the question. Whether Atlanta’s defence can duplicate what San Fran did though is highly unlikely.
Detroit (5-1, 2-1 H) lost to San Francisco 19-25, at home, in Week 6. QB Matt Stafford was 28 of 50 for 293 yards with two TDs, while TE Brandon Pettigrew had eight catches for 42 yards and a score. WR Calvin Johnson added seven receptions for 113 yards, but didn't score after being the NFL's first player with nine TD receptions in the first five games of a season. Outside of the 203 yards rushing the Lions gave up to San Francisco, they actually played pretty well in this game. Offensively they were stymied by the Niners inside linebacking duo of Patrick Willis and NaVorro Bowman and his team-high 14 tackles. But seeing how a young team reacts to its first bit of real heartbreak will be worth watching. Get $50 in Free NFL Picks here.
