Washington (3-2, 1-1 V) lost to Philadelphia 13-20, at home, in Week 6. Redskins QB Rex Grossman was benched after throwing his fourth interception late in the third quarter. He completed nine of 22 for 143 yards. He was replaced by John Beck, who made his first appearance since 2007 and led Washington's only touchdown drive. TE Fred Davis made six catches for 95 yards. Several Redskins players said that Rex Grossman should remain the starting quarterback. The most prominent among the players — wide receiver Santana Moss, a team captain — was also the most passionate. “No question," Moss said. "It’s not even something that should be asked. When it comes down to playing we know that you can’t just give up on somebody because they had a bad outing." LT Trent Williams and TE Chris Cooley are expected to miss at least the next two games as they rehab injuries suffered in last Sunday’s game. The team could move right tackle Jammal Brown to left tackle, a position where he won two Pro Bowl berths while with the New Orleans Saints from 2005-09. Then Sean Locklear could line up at right tackle, where he has played the bulk of his career. Brown said on Monday that he has not taken left tackle reps in practice since 2010. Locklear has received the bulk of backup reps behind Williams at left tackle this year. The Redskins are struggling mightily in the run game right now, so perhaps that is the opening that the Panthers need to finally get on the winning track. If they can stop the Redskins, they will score plenty of points.

Carolina (1-5, 1-2 H) lost to Atlanta 17-31, on the road, in Week 6. QB Cam Newton finished 21 of 35 for 237 yards, but was picked off three times. The other two were a little easier to take, the first coming on a deflected pass, the last on a desperation pass into the end zone on the final play of the game. The rookie also led the Panthers in rushing with 50 yards on six carries. Atlanta did a good job shutting down Carolina's top receiver, Steve Smith, who came into the game averaging nearly 23 yards per catch and more than 121 yards per game. He was held to five receptions for 66 yards. Cam Newton will shred the Redskins defense if they play anywhere near the level they displayed against the Eagles. The Redskins will not be able to stop Cam in the air if they stack the box, and DeAngelo Williams will run wild if they do not. The running game has really started to come back to life, so I expect they will move the ball well on the ground regardless. The combination of Cam, DeAngelo and Jonathan Stewart has got to be a challenge for any defensive coordinator. No matter how well Cam Newton and that dynamic offense moves the ball, the bottom line will be the defense. If they can't stop the Redskins, then the game will be up in the air like those before them. The defense certainly has had their share of challenges. Their linebackers were decimated when Thomas Davis and Jon Beason went down with season ending injuries. Ever since then, they have struggled mightily to stop the run.
