The injury to defensive tackle Jamaal Williams has hurt the defense a great deal. Without his presence stuffing the middle, the team has shown an inability to get to the quarterback or stop the run. As proof of such, the Chargers are giving up an average of 141 rush yards per game and they rank 29th in the league with seven sacks.
The offense, coincidentally, has problems with the same two things. San Diego can neither run the ball (tied with Arizona for dead last in rush yards per game at 57.6) nor protect the passer (15 sacks allowed). Phillip Rivers was taken down a career high five times on Monday by Denver.
Chiefs Breakdown: Kansas City got its first win of the season last weekend, beating the hapless Redskins 14-6 in Washington. Not much was pretty in the victory, but for a team desperate for anything encouraging it served its purpose. However, it was also wrought with evidence as to why the Chiefs had lost the first five games of the season. Kansas City cannot protect quarterback Matt Cassel, who will be lucky to survive the season if he keeps getting hit like he has been, and it cannot convert third downs. Cassel was sacked five times by Washington (22 times this year) and hit 10 others while the offense converted just 4-of-17 on third down (21-percent on the season).
