New Orleans (5-2, 2-2 V) set a franchise record for points and victory margin in a 62-7 home demolition of the hapless Indianapolis Colts, in Week 7. QB Drew Brees completed 31 of 35 passes for 325 yards and five touchdowns. Brees had two touchdown passes to Marques Colston and one to Darren Sproles in the first quarter. His fourth and fifth touchdown tosses went to second-year TE Jimmy Graham in the third quarter. It seemed the Saints could do whatever they wanted, also rushing for 236 yards.
New Orleans coach Sean Payton isn’t ready to rule out injured running back Mark Ingram for Sunday’s game at St. Louis. The rookie has an injured heel and sat out Wednesday’s practice. The Saints have plenty of depth at the position. Darren Sproles and Pierre Thomas have been sharing playing time with Ingram. If Ingram’s not ready to go, the Saints could activate Chris Ivory, who began practicing Wednesday after missing the first seven games. RB Sproles is doing more than he ever did in six productive seasons in San Diego. Through seven games, Sproles leads the NFL with 1,115 all-purpose yards and he’s getting more opportunities to run the ball and catch passes than ever before. He already has made New Orleans fans forget Reggie Bush, the last guy who was supposed to be a running back, receiver and return man.
St.Louis (0-6, 0-3 H) lost to Dallas 7-34, on the road, in Week 7. QB A.J. Feeley was mediocre in his first start since 2007, and Steven Jackson ran for 70 yards and a touchdown. St. Louis also had right tackle Jason Smith and backup defensive tackle Darell Scott carted off with head injuries. The Rams were without QB Sam Bradford and were averaging the fewest points in the league even with him. They also had by far the worst run defense in the NFL, allowing 163 yards per game.
Sam Bradford is still in a walking boot and it appears that at least another week will pass before the St. Louis Rams quarterback gets back on the field. Bradford was not at practice Wednesday while rehabbing from a high left ankle sprain, leaving his availability in doubt for the second straight game. Backup A.J. Feeley expects to get the call again this week against the Saints. The Rams are the lowest-scoring team in the NFL, averaging just nine points, so they weren't that effective even with Bradford behind center. They've scored four touchdowns in 14 trips inside the 20, just one spot above the league cellar in that category. Get $50 in Free NFL Picks here.
