Atlanta (4-3, 2-2 V) was on the bye week in Week 8. In Week 7 they held on to beat the Detroit Lions 23-16, on the road. QB Matt Ryan was 20 of 34 for 218 yards with a touchdown and two interceptions. RB Michael Turner ran 27 times — including a 50-yard gain — and finished with 122 yards rushing for the Falcons. Atlanta's Tony Gonzalez caught five passes for 62 yards, giving him 1,104 career receptions to trail only Jerry Rice in NFL history — by 445 catches.
Michael Turner is enjoying another productive season. He already has four 100-yard games and appears to be a lock for his third 1,000-yard season in the last four years. The Falcons seemed to stray from their run-first philosophy with Turner early in the season as coach Mike Smith had Ryan targeting rookie first-round pick Julio Jones in heavy doses. Jones had 24 catches through four games, including 11 for 127 yards at Seattle on Oct. 2. The rookie missed the last two games with a hamstring injury and is listed as questionable this week. The Colts are 31st in total defense (402.9 yards per game), 32nd in scoring defense (31.5 points per game) and tied for 30th with 12 sacks. Indianapolis is 31st against the run (144ypg), which doesn't bode well for trying to slow down Michael Turner
Indianapolis (0-8, 0-3 H) lost to Tennessee 10-27, on the road, in Week 8. QB Curtis Painter completed 26 of 49 passes for 250 yards and he was top rusher with seven carries for 79 yards. The Titans also sacked Curtis Painter twice and intercepted him twice, turning those turnovers into 14 points. The Colts outgained Tennessee 399-311, but couldn't overcome 10 penalties for 66 yards.
It's anybody's guess which of the Indianapolis Colts' defensive personalities will show up Sunday when they try dealing with Atlanta's RB Michael Turner. In four games, the Colts have been sound in their approach — good gap control, swarm to the football, solid tackling — and gotten the job done. Against Cleveland, Pittsburgh, Cincinnati and Tennessee, they allowed averages of 90.8 yards per game and 2.9 per attempt. But in the other four, they've been gored for averages of 197.3 and 5.2. The Colts are a one-gap defense with defenders assigned specific gaps between offensive linemen that might vary from play to play. Gap integrity not only hinges on defensive linemen, but linebackers and defensive backs as well. Should the inconsistency continue or the defense tire Sunday, Turner likely will capitalize.
