The Dolphins (3-4) won in NY Jets 30-25 in Week 8 and now sit third in the AFC East. QB Chad Henne made 12 of 21 passes for 112 yards with one TD pass; overall he’s thrown for 771 yards with four TD passes and three interceptions in five games for a 78.4 passer rating. RB Ronnie Brown had 11 carries for 27 yards, while RB Ricky Williams had eight carries for 27 yards and two catches for 41 yards with a TD. Ted Ginn Jr. had a great game after he brought two kickoffs back for TD’s. The Dolphins O-line allowed QB Henne to be sacked six times. The Dolphins had used their Wildcat formation to great effectiveness until the second half of a Week 7’s loss to the Saints. The Dolphins did not employ the Wildcat much in Week 8 and it will be interesting to see how often they utilize it in New England , the place where they first unveiled it early last season. The Pats defense is ranked 15th against the rush. Veteran DE/LB Jason Taylor rejoined the Dolphins in the offseason after a disappointing one-year hiatus in Washington and he has returned to his Pro Bowl form. He has 5.5 sacks, two forced fumbles and last week scored an NFL-record sixth career fumble return touchdown. Miami needs him at his best if it hopes to slow down Tom Brady and the explosive Patriots. The Fins struggle against the pass currently ranked 25th. The Dolphins average 25.1ppg and give up 25.3ppg, while they are 1-2 SU on the road where they average 16-7ppg and allow 22.3ppg. They are 3-4 ATS and 5-2 over/under. Dolphins coach Tony Sparano is 7-2 against the AFC East.
The Patriots (5-2) won in Tampa Bay 35-7 in Week 7 and sat out last week with a bye. The Pats sit atop the AFC East. Against the Bucs QB Tom Brady made 23 of 32 passes for 308 yards with three TD passes and two interceptions; overall he’s thrown for 2,032 yards with 15 TD passes with four interceptions for a 99.9 passer rating. RB Laurence Maroney had 13 carries for 43 yards with a TD, while WR Wes Welker made 10 catches for 107 yards with a TD. Sam Aiken and TE Benjamin Watson each added a TD. The Pats pulled down three interceptions and had three sacks on the day. On defense, Safety Brandon Meriweather is coming off a game in which he took advantage of inexperienced Bucs QB Josh Johnson and picked off two passes, returning one for a touchdown. He will look to capitalize on inexperienced Dolphins QB Chad Henne in a similar fashion, if the Dolphins throw the ball, as will promising rookies Darius Butler and Pat Chung. The Pats defense is ranked sixth best with a fifth ranked pass rush and 15th ranked rush defense, that’ll be truly tested against the Dolphins fourth ranked running game . As for offense they are third best with the league’s second best passing game. The Patriots average 28.3ppg and give up 14ppg, while they are 4-0 SU at home where they average 34.2ppg and allow 13.8ppg. They are 4-3 ATS and 3-4 over/under.
