NFL Picks: Detroit Lions at Arizona Cardinals

by Alexander Banks on Wednesday, November 7th, 2007

NFL Pick: Detroit at ArizonaDespite the NFL debacle that is Matt Milen the Detroit Lions will attempt to do something that they have never done since Millen arrived in NFL week 10.  That is to win 7 games in a single season.  The Lions currently sit at 6-2 SU and 5-2 ATS including a perfect 3-0 SU and ATS over their last 3 games.  Detroit has had 10 or more losses for six straight seasons but this season are only one game in back of the first place Green Bay Packers and are tied with the New York Giants for the second best record in the NFC.  This week they travel to Arizona to take on the Cardinals after they totally destroyed the Denver Broncos last week, 44-7. QB Jon Kitna completed 16-of-31 passes for 252 yards and two touchdowns while Kevin Jones rushed for 71 yards for Detroit. The Lions also scored two defensive touchdowns, forced four turnovers and came within 2 1/2 minutes of the franchise's first shutout 1996. The Lions sport the NFL’s 9th best passing attack that is led by Roy Williams, who has 43 receptions for 568 yards while rookie Calvin Johnson has kicked in with 19 catches for 320 yards.

The Cardinals come into this one off their third straight when they lost to Tampa bay last week 17-10.  The loss dropped them to 3-5 SU but they remained a profitable 5-3 ATS overall.   During their current losing streak the Cardinals are only averaging 13 points per game even though they feature two of the NFL’s best receivers in Anquan Boldin and Larry Fitzgerald. Last week the Cardinals had only 195 total yards while RB Edgerrin James was held to just 15 yards on nine carries. Even with their current woes Arizona is only one game behind first-place Seattle in the NFC West.

For the first time in recent memory the Lions have opened as a road favorite. Unfortunately the Lions haven’t done well in the desert as they are 0-4 SU and ATS since ’93 where in two of these games they are listed as the favorite. What could spell even more trouble for Detroit is that Arizona is 16-6 ATS vs. top-level teams (Win Pct. > 75%) since ’92.
