Houston (6-3, 2-2 V) got a 30-12 win over the Cleveland Browns, in Week 9. QB Matt Schaub completed 14 of 23 passes for 119 yards, while RB’s Arian Foster rushed for 124 yards, Ben Tate ran for 115 and both scored touchdowns. The Texans were playing without injured receiver Andre Johnson for the fifth straight game, but had a pair of 100-yard rushers for the second time in three weeks and moved three games over .500 for the first time.
The Texans have a dominating running attack that averages 155.1 yards a game and helps control the clock an average of 33 minutes, 43 seconds to go with a suffocating defense that has limited three consecutive opponents to fewer than 175 yards. No player personifies the Texans' rugged style more than inside linebacker Brian Cushing. "It's football, and it's a physical game, and we're a physical team," Cushing said after the defense limited the Browns to 172 yards, including 44 passing. "The talk was that we were soft, and all of a sudden we were dirty, but this defense is very motivated. The Browns couldn't block the Texans on the run or pass. RB Chris Ogbonnaya carried 13 times for 28 yards. "With the offense running the ball so well, it keeps us (defense) off the field," Phillips said. "We put a lot of pressure on the quarterback, and we didn't allow them to run the ball.
Tampa Bay (4-4, 3-2 H) lost to the New Orleans Saints 16-27, on the road, in Week 9. QB Josh Freeman had 281 passing yards, but he routinely was pressured and plagued by untimely overthrows. The Buccaneers hoped to get a boost from Blount's return after he'd missed two games with a left knee sprain. He gained 72 yards on 13 carries. Coach Raheem Morris is not shy about confronting the issues with his team, but that hasn't changed things. They still don't score many points, they've been gashed by opposing running games, and there is the issue of penalties. They are ahead of only Oakland in total penalty yardage, and the ones they get seem to come at the worst times. Last year, it seemed like Freeman went deep more often. He is averaging nearly a yard less per completion this season than in 2010 and he is on pace for 16 touchdowns — which would be a decline of nine from last year. Freeman also ran more often last year. He has said opponents have adjusted to that and have taken away some of those options, but football is a game of countermoves. All I know is Freeman's legs can be a huge weapon. This team doesn't have a lot of elite speed or game-breakers, so hoping to create plays in space can be risky business. Pounding the rock may be a better approach. I know they tried that Sunday and it worked with Blount for a while, but Morris said they went away from that after falling behind 14-0.
