Tonight's Monday Night Football match-up features a couple of NFC West teams headed in opposite directions. The San Francisco 49ers will take on the division leading Arizona Cardinals at the University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale, Arizona. ESPN Monday Night Football Betting odds at Sportsbook.com have the Cardinals as a -9.5 home favorite.
Arizona has clearly turned the corner in their second year under Head Coach Ken Whisenhunt. Strangely enough, Arizona could probably walk away with the division even if they had not improved on last season's play. The Cardinals are currently sitting at 5-3, but have a three game lead over the second place 49ers.
Last week the Birds scored their second division win of the season against the Rams in St. Louis. Kurt Warner and company piled up 510 yards on offense and capitalized on three St. Louis turnovers to get a 34-13 victory.
This season the Cardinals are averaging 29.3 points per game and giving up 23 per contest in return.
The 2-6 San Francisco 49ers, who are coming off a bye week, had quite a bit to think about during their time off. Prior to the mini-vacation, the 49ers were undressed 34-13 by the Seahawks at Candlestick Park. The beat down prompted new Head Coach Mike Singletary to do some undressing of his own at half-time when he dropped his pants to illustrate a point to his squad.
The 49ers are 1-2 on the road this year and have averaged 22.3 points per game away from home, but they have allowed an average of 30 points per game.
