San Francisco, which is also coming off a bye, won for the second time in its last three games by taking out Denver 24-16 at Wembley Stadium in London on Halloween. The Forty Niners looked perilously close to a seventh loss, trailing 10-3 headed into the fourth quarter, but three late touchdowns enabled them to make the long flight home in satisfaction.
Former Heisman winner Troy Smith, who started in place of the injured Alex Smith, completed 12-of-19 passes for 196 yards and a touchdown in the win. Smith's solid play earned him today's start against the Rams.
Despite St. Louis unexpected start to the season, it figures to be at a disadvantage against the mercurial Niners this afternoon. The Rams have lost six of their last eight at San Francisco and they have struggled on the road this year, where they are 0-3 with losses to Oakland, Detroit, and Tampa Bay.
