Fans Hating All Over Larry Johnson

by Thomas Jensen on Tuesday, November 17th, 2009

Larry Johnson is 75-yards from rushing in to the history books, and the fans couldn’t be more upset about it. After Johnson’s ludicrous attack on his coach, riddled with gay slurs that lit the community on fire, LJ has found himself in the dog house with both fans and franchise. After being such an integral part of Chiefs history for the past five-years, will the coaching staff abide by their fans wishes?

Fans Hating All Over Larry JohnsonFormerly a first round pick (27th overall) of the Kansas City Chiefs, Johnson has piled up 5,638 yards, 55 touchdowns, two Pro Bowl appearances and led the Chiefs to two playoff appearances. The 2005 was Johnson’s breakout season, where he notched 1,750 yards and 20 touchdowns. In 2006 he proved it wasn’t a fluke by steamrolling for 1,789 yards and 17 touchdowns. But stats mean nothing to the former fans of Kansas City who are vehemently petitioning against Johnson from getting the Chiefs record.

The current record holder was All World running sensation Priest Holmes, who is endeared by fans as being a consummate professional. Johnson’s blasting of his coach, via Twitter, has enraged the fan base of this proud franchise. But it’s not like Johnson hasn’t already suffered. He was suspended on November 8th for two games, but then the team blinked and reduced his monetary loss by half, meaning he’ll lose $315,000 during the suspension instead of the $630,000 he was supposed to. Way to teach him a lesson, Chiefs! This team can’t even play good defense during arbitration.

It’s not like this is the first instance of trouble for the back. He has three charges of assault against him, and is in the midst of serving two years of probation. All three assault charges were placed by women. So now Larry Johnson hates homosexuals and women. Next on his list: puppies and toddlers.

Johnson’s Chiefs face the Jacksonville Jaguars this weekend, and the NFL point spread is sitting at Jacksonville -6.5 with an O/U of 41.0. The Jaguars allow 89.3 yards per game against on the ground when at home (ranking 8th in the league) so it’s conceivable that Johnson could break the record this weekend. But if he plays every game for the rest of the season, all he needs to do is notch 8.3 yards per game. Not per carry…per game.

The embittered Johnson obviously has some anger management issues, and 1,400 fans have used his violent history, and his anti-gay slurs on Twitter, to lobby a case that he should be stricken from the record books by being held out of the record books. Other league malcontents, like Michael Vick, spoke of unspeakable crimes, were punished and are now enjoying million-dollar contracts and the adoration of the nation.

It’s impossible to really curb a guy’s contribution to a team because of a slip of the tongue. Yet, 1,400 of the Kansas City Chiefs’ fans have spoken. Now the Cincinnati Bengals will get their chance, with Johnson signing with teh surging AFC North team that swept the defending Super Bowl Champions this season.
