NFL Picks: Green Bay Packers at Detroit Loins

by Alexander Banks on Wednesday, November 21st, 2007

Week 12 of the NFL kicks of early this week as the Green Bay Packers visit the Detroit Lions in and NFL Pick on Thanksgiving Day.  Last week the Lions had hoped to make a statement to the rest of the NFL by beating the New York Giants.  Instead all they got was their second loss in a row and their first loss on their home field this season.  The loss dropped them to 6-4 SU on the year and they are now 3 games back of the Green Bay Packers.  A loss this week to the Packers would just about kill their hopes of a division title and possibly the Wild Card race as the Giants now own the tie breaker.  Joh Kitna was intercepted three times on 28 completions in 43 attempts and throwing for 377 yards.  The large number of throws was the result of a very ineffective running game as RB Kevin Jones had 11 rushes for only 25 yards.  Bodog.com has Detroit listed as a +3.5 underdog.

Green Bay, off their best start since 1962 when they went 10-0, look to put the finishing touches on a division title as they hold a three game lead over Detroit.  Although Detroit hasn’t has much success on Thanksgiving Day losing their last three by an average of over 23 points still need to be careful as the last time these two teams met on this date was in ’03 when Detroit won 22-14 as a 7 point underdog.  Last week Brett Favre continued his renaissance year as he completed 22 of 30 passes for 218 yards and three touchdowns.  It was Favre's 62nd career game with at least three touchdown passes.  Their running game wasn’t overwhelming but Ryan Grant did have 88 yards on 20 rushes.

So, will this be an easy one for the Green Bay Packers?  Before you run off thinking that the Packers can just mail this one in consider that next week they take on the Cowboys for, more than likely, home field advantage through the playoffs and are just 2-6 ATS in their L8 Thursday games.  In addition this is the first time they Green Bay will be listed as road favorite under Coach Mike McCarthy but have produced a 4-0 SU & ATS away mark in ’07 and 9-3 SU & ATS in his tenure. Detroit does own a 12-4 ATS mark hosting Green Bay.

So will the Packers be looking ahead to the Cowboys and mail in this one?
