On this Week 13 of the season you can list NFL picks as being critical or meaningless and so it goes when the San Francisco 49ers visit the Carolina Panthers this Sunday. After losing eight in row the 49ers finally got a win as they beat the Cardinals 37-31 in overtime as 10 point dogs to improve their overall mark to 3-9 SU. The 49ers went into last weeks game ranked last in the NFL in offense but did produce 374 yards of total offense that included RB Frank Gore rushing for 116 yards. San Francisco’s defense did have problems though as they allowed the Arizona offense to amass 552 yards but did cause 4 turnovers including 2 picks of Kurt Warner. Trent Dilfer, starting in place of injured Alex Smith completed 25 of 39 passes for 256 yards and two touchdowns, with no interceptions. Even with Carolina not winning a game at home this season the odds makers still don’t believe in San Francisco as Sportsbook.com lists them as a -3 point underdog.
The Carolina Panthers’ season continued to sink into oblivion as they lost for the fifth time in a row and remained winless at home this season losing to the New Orleans Saints 31-6. Once sitting pretty in the division the Panthers are not 4-7 SU and in danger of not making the playoffs. The Carolina offense continued their efforts in futility as they managed a total of only 195 yards. David Carr started after relic Vinny Testaverde was determined to be out for the game only 90 minutes before kickoff. Carr proceeded to complete only 18 of 36 passes for 152 yards and 3 interceptions. Not to be outdone the Carolina rushing attack ran 18 times for only 43 yards. Even with last weeks’ 37 points the 49ers are scoring just 13.6 points per game. With Carolina’s poor home record that will help as they are 25-8 ATS versus teams scoring 17 or less points per game. The Panthers are also 9-1 ATS in the L10 games of this series.
Carolina is 0-7 both SU and ATS their last seven home games. Will they break that streak this week?
