NFL Picks: Pittsburgh Steelers vs New England Patriots

by Alexander Banks on Thursday, December 6th, 2007

The potential of the New England Patriots going down to defeat as an NFL Picks in Week 14 happens whey they visit the Steelers.  The Steelers go into this contest looking for their third win in a row.  Last week the defeated a dreadful Cincinnati team to up their record to 9-3 SU.  Although the Patriot’s QB Tom Brady get all the press Pittsburgh QB has been no slouch.  Ben Roethlisberger comes into this contest with 25 touchdown passes and 8.0 yards per attempt which ranks him second to the Brady, and his 102.9 quarterback rating ranks him third.  However after a passing rating of at least 99.9 in six of the Pittsburgh's first eight games he hasn't been above 81.3 in the past three weeks, throwing for less than 200 yards in each game with three touchdowns and four interceptions.  The Steelers also come in with the #1 ranked defense in points allowed, total yards and passing yards in the NFL. New England counters with being No. 1 ranked offensively in each of those same categories.   The books are still looking at this game as a somewhat mismatch as Betonline.com has Pittsburgh a -10 point dog.

New England goes into this game looking to become the fourth team to start an NFL season 13-0 – and the first to win 16 straight regular-season games since the Steelers in 2004-05. Ironically it was the Steelers who ended New England's league-record 21-game winning streak – 18 in the regular season – on Oct. 31, 2004, when it was in the midst of winning 16 in a row.  Last week for the second week in a row the Patriots had to pull off fourth quarter heroics to remain unbeaten.  This time it was the Baltimore Ravens,  who hadn't found much of an offense this season, that put the scare into the Patriots when RB Willis McGahee ran for 138 yards and the Patriots were trailing 24-20 when they got the ball with 3 1/2 minutes to play.  The recent New England problems seem to be centered around their defense although they are still third in the NFL in total defense, giving up 289.4 yards per game, they allowed an average of 383.5 yards against Philadelphia and Baltimore.

If Pittsburgh is going to be the one to break New England’s quest for an undefeated season they are going to have to improve their road performance as they are only 2-3 SU & ATS on the road this season. New England has been tough at home going 5-0 SU & 4-1 ATS and winning by an average of 24 points per game. However,  the underdog is 6-2 SU & 7-1 ATS in the L8 meetings between these teams.

Most are looking to Pittsburgh to end New England’s unbeaten mark as this might be the last team on their schedule capable of doing just that!
