The Carolina Panthers hang on to slim playoff hopes in Week 14 of NFL Picks when they travel to take on the Jacksonville Jaguars. After a string of home losses that dated back to November of last season the Panthers were able to beat the 49ers with the oldest QB in the NFL, Vinny Testaverde behind center. The win last week snapped a 5 game SU losing streak and left the Panthers are 5-7 SU overall, one game back for the final Wild Card spot.
Testaverde returned Sunday from his sore back and Carr was demoted to third string. Testaverde threw for only 153 yards and had two interceptions but he directed an offense that took risks and snapped a streak of 12 straight quarters at home without an offensive touchdown. The Carolina defense that had a league-low 10 sacks in the first 11 games, also stepped up as they recorded six sacks as well as returning an interception for a touchdown. SBGglobal.com has Carolina listed as a huge -10.5 point Underdog
The Jaguars who hold the top Wild Card spot at 8-4 SU were hoping to pull in a tie with Indianapolis last week for the division lead but instead lost their second in a row to the Colts 28-25. The loss to the Colts just about sewed up the division and left Jacksonville to compete for the Wild Card. The loss snapped a three game Jacksonville winning streak. Jacksonville QB David Garrard had a good day against the Colts defense hitting on 24 of 29 passes for 257 yards but did throw a pick. Fred Taylor had a good day rushing for 104 yards in 14 carries, his second straight 100-yard game after having none previously this season. Jacksonville was able to stuff the Indianapolis running game allowing RB Joseph Addai to gain only 67 yards but succumbed to Manning, who seemed to finally get used to the fact he didn’t have Marvin Harrison, as he threw for four touchdowns.
Carolina needs a win badly to keep their hopes of a playoff birth alive but history hasn’t been kind to them as they have lost five straight versus the AFC going 0-4-1 ATS. Meanwhile the Jags are 12-5 ATS as a favorite versus the NFC and 4-2 SU/ 3-3 ATS at home this season. The teams have met only three other times with the underdog going 3-0 ATS.
It’s down to the wire and this is another game where both teams needs a win. Jacksonville seems to be the better team thus far this season, but will that matter?
