Chicago Bears on Track to Bash the Minnesota Vikings

by Alexander Banks on Monday, December 17th, 2007

Bears on Track to Bash the VikingsThe Chicago Bears roll into the Metrodome this evening in what they hope will produce a victory over their divisional rival Minnesota Vikings.  The Bears have lost three of its last four pretty much putting them out of the playoff picture after reaching the Super Bowl just 10 months ago.  Last years success was the result of a tough Chicago defense that seems to have all but disappeared this season.  Even though the Bears held Washington to a season low 31 yards on the ground in last Thursday's 24-16 loss they are still 24th in the league against the run allowing 123.2 yards per game.  Bodog.com has the Bears a double digit +11 point underdog.

In last weeks loss the Bears starting QB Rex Grossman sprained his knee and will be out for the remainder of the season.  Tonight, surprisingly, head coach Lovie Smith has shunned the veteran journeyman QB Brian Griese in favor of third-string quarterback Kyle Orton.  As a rookie in 2005, Orton helped lead the Bears to a 10-5 record and a NFC North Division title before being benched for Grossman.

This might be just want the Chicago offense needs as Orton seems to be going into this game with a bit of a chip on his shoulder when quoted as saying "I think everybody knows that I've been frustrated and haven't liked my role, but it's what it was and I tried to make the best of it and now my job's just to focus on the future and try to play well and let everything work itself out,".

The Bears would like nothing more than to derail the Minnesota train and knock them out of the playoff tonight and history just might be on their side.  Minnesota comes in as the top rushing team in the NFL averaging 172  yards per game and 5.5 yards per rush. However, Chicago is 22-8 ATS versus teams who rush for more than 130 yards per game.
