NFL Picks Week 16: Miami Dolphins at New England Patriots

by Alexander Banks on Wednesday, December 19th, 2007

The Patriots can become the first NFL Picks team in history to win their first 15 regular season games in Week 16  when they host the Miami Dolphins on this week. The Patriots come in at a perfect 14-0 SU and are two wins away from becoming the second team in league history to complete an undefeated regular season.  In addition to that record the Patriots also can tie their own NFL record of 18 consecutive regular season victories. Their last loss was to these same Miami Dolphins way back on December 10, 2006.   Last week QB Tom Brady had his worst game of the season going 14 of 27 passing for 140 yards with no touchdowns.  It was the first time this season that Brady failed to throw a touchdown pass for the first time since the loss to the Dolphins.   However, with Brady struggling the Patriots were able to get the running game going as RB Laurence Maroney posted his second 100-yard game of the season, rushing for a season-high 104 yards and a touchdown on 26 carries.   If might be a bit surprising to some that the Patriots are listed as only a -22 point favorite by BetUs.com

Last weekend, the Miami Dolphins managed to avoid the distinction of joining the 1976 Tampa Bay Buccaneers as the only teams in league history to start a season with 14 straight losses as they beat an aging Baltimore team 22-16 victory over the Baltimore Ravens.  QB Cleo Lemon had a good game versus a once tough Baltimore pass defense as he was 23 of 39 for 315 yards with a touchdown and no interceptions.  The Dolphin defense was also able to shut down the Baltimore offense in the second half that allowed them to come back from a 17-0 deficit for the win.

The chances of Miami winning two in a row might be a bit of a stretch as they 0-8 ATS in the second half of the season versus teams winning 75% or more of their games and have been outscored by a 32.0-4.5 margin.  Meanwhile the Patriots are 5-2 SU & 6-1 ATS in their L7 when playing Miami in Foxboro.

This one doesn’t pose much of a problem for New England but consider that Miami has the extra motivation as being the team who could defend the honor of the ’72 unbeaten Dolphins.
