NFL Picks Week 16: Cleveland Browns vs Cincinnati Bengals

by Alexander Banks on Thursday, December 20th, 2007

In a surprising NFL Picks the Cleveland Browns look to secure an AFC Playoff spot when they travel in Week 16 to take on the Cincinnati Bengals.  The Browns who got pounded by the Pittsburgh Steelers in their first game of the season would have never figured to be playing meaningful games in December.  Now with last weeks big win over the Bill and the Steelers loss they are now tied for first in their division.  The Browns can clinch their first playoff appearance since 2002 if they can beat the Bengals this week.  In their win last week they won the game with a huge ground game that saw RB Jamal Lewis rush for 163 yards on 33 carries.  The Cleveland defense was also tough as they allowed only 240 yards of total offense and recorded their first shutout since 2005.  Bodog.com has the Browns a favorite on the road at -3 points.

Marvin Lewis was the only coach in Bengal history to boast to never have a losing season.  Well that is all by the board now as the Bengals clinched their first losing season since 2002 loss to the San Francisco 49ers at Monster Park last week. The lost dropped them to 5-9 with only two games remaining.  The Cincinnati offense has been horrible recently and scored only one touchdown for the third game in a row.  Their defense also didn’t show up to play as they couldn't find a way to stop the 49ers running game allowing RB Frank Gore 138 yards rushing. San Francisco had entered the game at the NFL's bottom in offensive rankings.  The Bengals also allowed QB Shaun Hill, who was making his first start in six seasons, to pass for 197 yards on 21 of 28 passing.

Up to last week’s game, both offenses can move the ball and score.  That fact will be interesting in betting this game since Bengals are 1-10 ATS versus teams scoring 24 or more points per game over the L3 seasons but are a profitable 16-4 ATS in their L20 second half games against teams allowing great then 24 points per game.

Cleveland has everything to play for while Cincinnati can grab the golf clubs in a couple of weeks.
