NFL Picks: New York Jets vs Tennessee Titans

by Alexander Banks on Sunday, December 23rd, 2007

After coming within one game of the divisional lead early in the season the Tennessee Titans play in Week 16 versus the New York Jets with not being able to control their own destiny for the playoffs.  The only thing they can do this week is focus on winning and hope that the Pittsburgh Steelers, Cleveland Browns and Jacksonville Jaguar don’t all win as they would eliminate the from contention.  The Titans stayed alive for one more weekend with a 26-17 comeback victory against the Kansas City Chiefs last weekend.   QB Young completed 16 of 26 passes for 191 yards as Tennessee scored at least 26 points for the first time since putting up 28 against Houston on October 21. RB LenDale White rushed for 93 yards on 24 carries and needs 40 more yards this week against the Jets to reach 1,000 for the season.   Tennessee is positioned as a -8.5 favorite at Sportsbetting.com

The New York Jets come into this one knowing that they played their second straight of good football in playing the undefeated Patriots close last week. The Jets got within 17-10 with just over six minutes to play before the Patriots added a late field goal.  Former starting QB Chad Pennington had to come into the game to relieve an injured Kellen Clemens and finished the game completing 25 of 38 for 186 yards.   The New York line has been a problem all season as they have allowed 44 sacks on the year.  That could be a big problem as they will be facing a Tennessee defense that ranks
fifth in the league give up an average of 298.2 yards per game.  The Jets will also have to tighten up their own defense as their run defense is ranked 30th in the league at 141.1 yards allowed per game.

Betting on the Titans this week could be a bit risky as they are only 2-6-1 ATS in their L9 as a favorite of 6 points or more. But, since they are playing the Jets a thing to consider is that they are also 18-7 ATS versus terrible teams who have a winning percentage of less than 25% so he figures to have them focused on the task at hand.  Divisional games also seem to take a lot out of the Jets as they are10-23 ATS coming off a road divisional loss.

Tennessee needs to focus on the Jets and not watch the scoreboard so they are not surprised with a loss like Pittsburgh was earlier in the season.
