NFL Week 16 Predictions: Dallas Cowboys vs Arizona Cardinals Betting Odds

by Scott Burgess on Saturday, December 25th, 2010

The struggling Arizona Cardinals host the Dallas Cowboys, Saturday Dec 25, as either team hopes Santa Claus brings them a Christmas win. The Cardinals won their last meeting 24-30 (OT), at home, in 2008. NFL oddsmakers have the Cowboys as -6 point road favorites over the Cardinals while the game's total has been posted at 45 points. The Cowboys (5-9) (3-3 V) beat Washington 33-30, at home, in Week 15. QB Jon Kitna made 25 of 37 passes for 305 yards with two TD’s and no interceptions. RB Felix Jones had 12 carries for 70 yards and Tashard Choice helped out with a TD. TE Jason Witten made 10 catches for 140 yards with a TD, while Miles Austin made three for 38 with a TD. Their defense pulled down two interceptions and got five sacks. The Cowboys defense – mostly the secondary but not entirely the secondary – is simply not ready for big-time football. The Redskins WR Armstrong was the eighth opponent to have a 100-yard receiving day against Dallas this season, the most since 1985. On the plus side, he didn't make it to 200, so the streak started by the Colts' Reggie Wayne and Eagles' DeSean Jackson at least reached its conclusion.  The bottom line is that some of new coordinator Paul Pasqualoni's changes have not worked. When basically nothing was working for Phillips, it's an achievement that anything at all is working for Pasqualoni. But the problem is that the players who have been to Pro Bowls – Newman and his fellow corner Mike Jenkins – often look as beatable as the secondary's rookies and unproven players. For Dallas it's not really about who serves as head coach next season. It's about who serves as defensive coordinator and how the Dallas defense gets fixed since it was primarily that unit's demise that got Wade Phillips fired last month. The Cowboys offense is ranked seventh overall (364ypg) with the fourth best ranked pass game (263ypg), and a 23rd ranked running game (101ypg). They score the eighth most amount of points per-game (24.7ppg). Dez Bryant leads their offense with eight TD’s. The Cowboys battle the Cardinals 27th ranked defense (373ypg), their 23rd ranked pass rush (228ypg) and their 30th ranked rush defense (145ypg). The Cards defense gives up the 29th most points per-game (26.4ppg). Kerry Rhodes has four interceptions for the Cardinals.

The Cardinals (4-10) (3-4 H) lost in Carolina 12-19 in Week 15. QB John Skelton made 17 of 33 passes for 196 yards with no TD’s and one interception. RB Timothy Hightower had 6 carries for 16 yards, while WR Larry Fitzgerald made nine catches for 125 yards. Their defense got two sacks and no interceptions. There was only one good thing that came out of the Cardinals loss this week, WR Larry Fitzgerald caught his 600th pass on Sunday. They are going to continue to struggle until they find a quarterback with experience. The Cardinals have the NFL’s second worst offense (268ypg) with the NFL’s second worst ranked pass game (181ypg) and a 30th ranked ground game (86ypg). Larry Fitzgerald leads their offense with five TD’s. The Cardinals battle the Cowboys 25th ranked defense (367ypg), their 27th ranked pass rush (254ypg) and their 17th ranked rush defense (112ypg). The Cowboys give up the 31st most amount of points per-game (28.2ppg).
