The New Orleans Saints seem to have light shining on them in Week 17 of NFL Picks when they travel to the “Windy City” to take on the Chicago Bears. Last week it appeared that the Saints playoff run was over when they lost to the eagles to put them at 7-8 SU on the season. But the Saints stayed in the hunt when the Vikings lost to the Redskins. In fact, the Saints can make the playoffs with a win over the Bears and losses by the Redskins and Vikings as they hold the tie breaker. If they can pull it off the Saints they will become only the second team in NFL history to make the playoffs following an 0-4 start. Defense has been a problem for the Saints all season long as they rank 29th in total yards and gave up 435 yards last week. None the less, the playoff possibility is putting the Saints as a -3 point road favorite at WagerWeb.com
After reaching the Super Bowl last year the Bears go into the final game of the year out of the playoffs and 6-9 SU overall. But if last week was any indication they haven’t given up as they completed a season sweep of their bitter rivals Green Bay Packers and ruined their hopes for home field advantage throughout the NFC playoffs. Chicago Bears QB Kyle Orton only passed for 101 yards in his second straight start but posted his first victory since defeating the Atlanta Falcons, 16-3, on December 15, 2005. The Bears not only can finish the season on a good note with a win but can also end the Saints playoff hopes and season.
Chicago will finish with a losing record for the first time since 200 even with a win but that could be a problem for Bears backers as New Orleans is 23-9 ATS in their L32 road games against teams who have won less then 50% of their games in the second half of the season. For total players the over is 6-2 ATS in the L8 head-to-head meetings between these teams.
The Saints got a reprieve last week even when they needed a win so it will be interesting to see if they bring in an attitude to play well enough to at least give them a shot to make the playoffs.
