NFL Picks: New England Patriots at New York Giants

by Alexander Banks on Saturday, December 29th, 2007

A game that means nothing in terms of playoff positioning means everything in terms of history as the New England Patriots are at the New York Giants on Saturday night.  New England will try and become only the second team in NFL history to finish a regular season unbeaten and the first to go 16-0.  With so much history on the line the NFL decided that they would allow CBS and NBC to televise the game.  Originally the game was only to be shown on the NFL Network but the league relented to fan pressure. SBG Global reports that early NFL betting has the public taking Patriots on the Road.

NFL Betting Preview
New England Patriots (15-0) at New York Giants (10-5)
Saturday, 8:15 pm Eastern – CBS, NBC & NFL Network

SBG Global Opening Line: Patriots  -14.5, Total 44

It is unlikely that New England will be resting any starters with history on the line.  In addition to a chance to finish unbeaten, quarterback Tom Brady is trying to break Peyton Manning’s TD record while Randy Moss is trying to break Jerry Rice’s TD reception record. "We know we have an opportunity to get to 16," said Brady, "That would be a great accomplishment for this team."  The Giants will probably want to rest their starters although most will at least start the game. The Giants will visit Tampa Bay next week in the playoffs and the game against the Patriots means nothing. "We want to win every game, and we want our players to be as sharp as they can, but that having been said, I am aware of the fact that all the things you talk about are true," Giants coach Tom Coughlin said.  The Patriots are also just six points back of the all-time NFL record for points scored in a season held by the Minnesota Vikings.  It seems a certainty they will break that record along with a few others. Brady needs two touchdown passes to break Peyton Manning's record of 49 and Moss is two TD receptions away from breaking Jerry Rice's record of 22. "We play the Giants next," Moss said. "They're standing in our way and we'll try to get a victory. We'll put 11 on the field and try to get a victory."

SBG Global Current Line: Patriots  -13 , Total 46.5

"There have been things every week, different distractions every week that we've dealt with," Patriots coach Bill Belichick said. "I think the players have done a good job of staying focused in approaching the games, coming to work, working hard and paying attention, putting the team first."  The Patriots are also trying to break the NFL record for consecutive victories.  They are trying for their 19th win in a row. New England has won every game this season but the last few have not been as easy. A problem for the Patriots of late has been the run defense which is giving up an average of 136.3 yards per game this month.

The Giants are nursing some injuries so it will be interesting to see if receiver Plaxico Burress, linebacker Antonio Pierce, safety Gibril Wilson and running back Brandon Jacobs play.

The Giants are only 3-4 at home this season.  They are only team in the NFL that made the playoffs that does not have a winning record at home.  Here are the NFL betting stats for Saturday’s game.
