There were so many fast Defensive Backs this year at the NFL Combine but Point-Spreads.com was able to find one potential superstar and a fair amount of depth in this year’s NFL Draft class. Plenty of teams should find a way to improve their pass defense this year.
Playmaking LSU Tigers safety LaRon Landry has what it takes to become a star and should be among the first 10 players selected on draft day. Florida underclassman Reggie Nelson may be the only other safety tabbed in the first round, however.
But cornerbacks should hear their names called early and often.
Led by Michigan’s Leon Hall and Pittsburgh’s Darrelle Revis, there could be as many as five corners taken in the first round and perhaps 15 on the first day, according to ratings by NFLDraftScout.com.
The only defensive back that I want to criticize is Daymeion Hughes from California. Hughes has great instincts and was very productive on the field, but speed wise, he will be a liability in the NFL. Hughes measured in at 5’ 10” 190 pounds, but didn’t look good running in the drills, and he ran his 40 yard dash in 4.65 seconds. One of the top corners, Darelle Revis from Pitt chose not to workout at the NFL Combine.
Here are all the DBs that ran the 40 yard dash under 4.40 seconds:
4.32 – Chris Houston – Arkansas Razorbacks
4.35 – LaRon Landry – LSU Tigers
4.36 – Eric Wright – UNLV Rebels
4.36 – Jonathan Wade – Tennessee Volunteers
4.39 – Leon Hall – Michigan Wolverines
4.39 – Marcus McCauley – Fresno State Bulldogs
4.39 – Kenny Scott – Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets
4.39 – Josh Wilson – Maryland Terrapins
All of these sub 4.4 second prospects will receive nice paychecks to play on Sunday's after the 2007 NFL Draft.
