2012 Super Bowl Picks

by Alexander Banks on Tuesday, January 31st, 2012

2012 super bowl ny giants eli manningWhile everyone’s attention is squarely on the Patriots and the status of their Pro Bowl tight end, the New York Giants seem to be flying a little under the radar these days. However, Eli Manning and Tom Coughlin wouldn’t want it any other way, as they’re once again, not only listed as the NFL Point Spreads underdogs, but aren’t getting nearly as much attention as their 2012 Super Bowl Picks counterparts.

With a quiet confidence, the Giants have gone from nearly having their head coach fired to the brink of their second Vince Lombardi Trophy in four years. the part of it all, is that the Giants could easily go down in history as the ones responsible for Tom Brady not reaching Terry Bradshaw and Joe Montana as the only quarterbacks in NFL history to win four Super Bowls.

Much like in their first meeting, the New York Giants [+3] will have to defy the odds if they want to become champs, as 2012 Super Bowl Picks specialists around the globe have listed the New England Patriots [-3] as the betting odds favorites by at least a field goal. It would also appear that odds makers are expecting this game to come down to offensive execution, evidenced by a high OVER/UNDER of 55 points.

In their first meeting four years ago, the Pats and the Giants combine to score a mere total of 31 points. Although the Giants defense isn’t what it was in 2008, New York’s front four is as good as any team when it comes to applying pressure on the quarterback.

“I don’t think anyone thought we’d lose that game, not because we’d roll our helmets out on the field and we’re the Patriots and we’re going to win,” Brady said in retrospect. “You look at the last game we played against these guys. We were 2-of-5 in the red area and they were 3-of-5. One or two plays made the difference, and one or two plays made the difference in the Super Bowl.”

After seeing the way Brady struggled in the Championship game against the Ravens defense, you can bet that Coughlin will be sending plenty of pressure in No.12’s direction and force him into mistakes.

Having that said, Bill Belichick isn’t about to let the G-Men’s huge defenders disrupt what their offensive gameplan is. The Giants can expect a fair doze of short-passes and quick throws in order to neutralize the Giants pass-rush. The key for Brady is going to be to keep the turnovers down against what should be a number of blue jerseys coming at him from all directions.

“We’ve been in 18 games this year. Even the three losses have come down to the last drive of the game,” Brady added. “Our loss to the Giants came down to the last drive of the game. When we work on the two-minute drill in practice, I think offensively or defensively, it’s going to come down to that. Whoever executes best in that last situation, I think it’s going to come down to that.”
