The San Diego Chargers have hired San Francisco Forty-Niners offensive coordinator Norv Turner today (Feb. 19) to be their next head football coach after firing Marty Schottenheimer on Feb. 12. Turner is the only man to interview for the Chargers job with previous experience as head coach, however, his NFL record is the 10th worst in winning percentage in league history. The San Diego job will be Turner’s third career job in the NFL as a head football coach beginning with his hiring as head coach of the Washington Redskins in 1994. Following his tenure with the Redskins, Turner replaced Bill Callahan as head coach of the Oakland Raiders following the 2003 season. Turner was the offensive coordinator with the Dallas Cowboys on Jimmy Johnson’s staff when Dallas won back to back Super Bowls in 1992 and 1993. Turner got much of the credit for not only their success, but for helping shape quarterback Troy Aikman into a Hall of Fame player. In seven seasons with the Redskins, he went 49-59-1 and made the playoffs only once, in 1999, where they lost to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the second round. Following his tenure with the Redskins, he went on to serve as offensive coordinator for the Chargers in 2001 and the Miami dolphins in 2002 and 2003. Following the 2003 season, Oakland Raiders owner Al Davis hired Turner to head the Raiders where Turner went 5-11 in 2004 and 4-12 in 2005 and was fired following the 2005 season. During Turner’s two years with the Raiders, he managed only one win against his division, the AFC West. In addition, turner was unable to jumpstart an offense that in 2005 included All-Pro wide receiver Randy Moss. With San Diego, Turner will inherit a very talented football team, something he didn’t have the luxury of with the Redskins and Raiders. He inherits the likes of league MVP, running back LaDanian Tomlinson, the leagues best tight end, Antonio Gates, a top young quarterback, Phillip Rivers and a defense dotted with Pro-Bowlers.
