The Cincinnati Bengals travel to Houston to take on the Texans, Saturday Jan 7th, for an AFC Wild-card game. The AFC divisional round game between the Texans and the Bengals will be the first time that two rookie quarterbacks have faced each other in a playoff game. NFL oddsmakers have the Texans as -3 point home favorites over the Bengals with the over/under set at 38 points. Cincinnati (9-7, 5-3 V) went 3-5 over the second half of the season, only beating two really bad teams, 2-14 St. Louis and 4-12 Cleveland, plus 8-8 Arizona. The Bengals’ QB Andy Dalton is a rookie making his post-season debut in what should be a hyper-hostile environment, even if he is from Texas. In Cincinnati Dec. 11, the Texans held Dalton’s offense to 81 second-half yards in a 20-19 victory. Rookie QB, Andy Dalton, turned into a solid season and helped lead the Bengals to the playoffs. The Houston native has completed 58.1% of his passes for 3,398 yards, 20 TD’s and 13 INT’s as a rookie. History doesn’t bode well for either, as rookie QB’s have gone 6-9 in the playoffs, throwing 15 TD’s and 23 INT’s.
Houston (10-6, 5-3 H) are not playing like a Super Bowl team. They’ve lost three straight and the 22 points they scored in Sunday’s loss were the most they have scored since Nov. 13. The Texans last victory came against these same Bengals. I f the Texans are going to beat the Bengals twice, they better contain rookie receiver A.J. Green, who had five catches for 59 yards in the first meeting. “Houston is a great team,” Green said. “We had them (nearly beat), but they came back, so it’s going to be a tough team to play. They’re going to have the crowd (in their favor) down there, so we’re going to have to go out there and play (well).” QB T.J. Yates, since taking over for Matt Leinart in Week 12, who himself was taking over from Matt Schaub, Yates has been solid if unspectacular. He has thrown just three touchdowns, but has also only thrown three interceptions while completing 61 percent of his passes. If Yates can’t go, the job would fall to Jake Delhomme, who saw his first extended action on Sunday in the Texans’ season finale. Delhomme was 18 of 28 for 211 yards and a touchdown in relief of Yates. Yates is coming off an injury to his non-throwing shoulder that knocked him out of Houston’s 23-22 loss to the Tennessee Titans
