Hours after the Broncos were eliminated from an entry into the post season; just after 2 am Corner back Darrent Williams was reported dead at the scene of an early Monday morning drive by. An unknown vehicle pulled up along side Williams’ white Hummer style limousine and unloaded upon the driver’s side, shooting three, killing the 24 year old rising star. Apparently during a New Year’s Eve celebration at a night club a dispute provoked the attack on the limousine on Speer Boulevard, a main street though downtown Denver. It later rolled onto a snow bank left by the recent heavy winter snow falls and was littered with small yellow plastic markers all used to indicate any possible evidence. Bet on NFL Football at WagerWeb! Sonny Jackson a spokesman for the Denver Police said there was a dispute at a nightclub several blocks from the shooting where Williams and his group had attended a party. He said the argument didn't specifically involve Williams, according to witnesses, and the confrontation wasn't physical, just taunts. Two unidentified companions in the limousine were also injured and rushed off to the hospital. Williams was pronounced dead at the scene while the young man and woman remained unnamed. Their identities placed under wraps for security reasons. Williams, a second-round draft pick out of Oklahoma State in 2005, made an immediate impact on the Broncos. He started nine times in his rookie season following a stellar college career. Champ Bailey was among the Broncos players and staff members who gathered at Denver Health Medical Center, where Williams' body was taken. Darrent teamed with Bailey to give Denver one of the NFL's top cornerback tandems. Williams finished the season with 88 tackles, 78 of them solo, and four interceptions.Bet on NFL Football at WagerWeb! On Sunday against the 49ers, Williams had three tackles and returned two punts for 50 yards before leaving the game with a shoulder injury late in the second half. After the game he said he planned to wait a few weeks before deciding if he needed an operation. Players and coaches were off Monday and were scheduled to meet Tuesday before heading home for the off season. Coach Mike Shanahan said the killing left him "speechless with sadness." "We all know that Darrent was an excellent player, but as a person, he was a first-class young man who brightened every room with his smile, attitude and personality," Shanahan said. "I cannot express how heartsick I feel at this loss." |
