Detroit Lions vs Green Bay Packers Spread 2011 NFL Week 17 Predictions

by Scott Burgess on Wednesday, December 28th, 2011

The playoff bound Green Bay Packers host the Detroit Lions, Sunday Jan 1st, who have made the playoffs for the first time since 1999. The Packers secured home-field advantage in the NFC. NFL oddsmakers have the Lions as -3.5 point road favorites over the Packers with the over/under set at 46.5 points. Detroit (10-5, 5-2 V) beat the San Diego Chargers 38-10, at home, in Week 16. QB  Matthew Stafford threw three touchdown passes in the first half and held San Diego scoreless until midway through the third quarter. Stafford was almost perfect in the first half completing 21 of 26 passes for 260 yards. The Lions have won three straight after a seven-game slump to earn an NFC wild card, turning around the franchise after it was bad enough just three years ago to become the league’s only 0-16 team.

Lions coach Jim Schwartz said Monday he doesn’t intend to step off the gas pedal for Sunday’s game against the Packers. The Lions already are in the playoffs, but don’t expect to rest key players as they attempt to snap a 20-game road losing streak against the Packers. “We’re going to play the game to win,” Schwartz said. “It’s football, we’re going to try to win the game.” Schwartz said the team’s Allen Park facility will be a busy place this week preparing for the Packers, as well as numerous playoff scenarios as either the fifth or sixth wild-card seed. “Our quality control guys won’t get much sleep this week,” he said.

Green Bay (14-1, 7-0 H) clinched the No. 1 seed in the NFC playoffs with a 35-21 home victory over the rival Chicago Bears, in Week 16. QB Aaron Rodgers had the first five-touchdown game of his career. Rodgers threw a pair of touchdowns to Jordy Nelson, another two to James Jones, and found Jermichael Finley for a score for the Packers, who secured home-field advantage in the NFC.

It’s decision time for Green Bay Packers coach Mike McCarthy. Will McCarthy rest and protect his starters in the Packers’ otherwise meaningless Week 17 game against the Detroit Lions? Or will he keep full throttle on a record-breaking season in hopes of entering the playoffs on the highest note possible?  McCarthy is already on record this season as saying the Packers “won’t play scared” in their remaining regular-season games, and indications were that he was prepared to push for a perfect 16-0 season if the opportunity availed. But that possibility ended Dec. 18 in Kansas City, and the Packers’ victory Sunday night locked up home-field advantage throughout the NFC playoffs. McCarthy continued his tough talk Sunday night, but for the first time offered a caveat that suggests he won’t do anything rash, especially with quarterback Aaron Rodgers, to secure a victory over the Lions. Added Rodgers: “I think we need to get healthy. That’s the most important thing. This was a good win for us to get back on the right track [and] get the No. 1 seed obviously. Now that we have the top seed locked up, I think the priorities may shift a little.”
