The Green Bay Packers organization realized there was no quick fix when they gave Mike McCarthy, the former Brett Favre quarterback coach, the head coaching job. Last season was the first time in Favre’s career that the Packers did not have a .500 or better record. McCarthy should be able to improve over last season’s pathetic 4 – 12 record that caused Mike Sherman to lose his job.
Brett Favre decided to come back for another year as the quarterback of the Green Bay Packers. Part of the reason for Favre’s decision to return was that they ended 2005 on a bad note mostly do to injuries to running back Ahman Green and wide receiver Javon Walker as oppose to Favre performance. With a limited supporting cast, Farve forced a ton of plays but still threw for 3,881 yards and 20 touchdowns. The only problem was he threw 29 interceptions. This season Green will return but Walker has moved on. Instead, wide receiver Donald Driver will play across from Robert Ferguson. Bubba Franks will start at tight end.

McCarthy promoted Bob Sanders to defensive coordinator from his defensive end coaching position with the Green Bay Packers. Sanders and general manager Ted Thompson used the draft to rebuild the Packers defense in the off season. Green Bay had a NFL record 12 picks in the 2006 NFL Draft. Thompson selected Ohio State Buckeyes Linebacker AJ Hawk in the first round and picked up linebacker Abdul Hodge from Iowa in the third round. Green Bay is hoping these new players will help stabilize the defense in 2006 along with new cornerback free agent signee Charles Woodson.
