Indianapolis Colts vs Jacksonville Jaguars Spread 2011 NFL Week 17 Predictions

by Scott Burgess on Tuesday, December 27th, 2011

The Indianapolis Colts make their way into Jacksonville, Sunday Jan 1st, to take on the Jaguars. The Colts have a good chance at winning three straight. NFL oddsmakers have the Jaguars as -4 point home favorites over the Colts with the over/under set at 37 points. Indianapolis (2-12, 0-7 V) beat Houston 19-16, at home, in Week 16. The Colts now have won two in a row, both against division rivals, behind QB Dan Orlovsky, the former Texans quarterback who lost his first nine NFL starts. Reggie Wayne caught a 1-yard touchdown pass from Dan Orlovsky with 19 seconds left for the win.

It’s the next game, and the last game, in a season to forget for the Indianapolis Colts. That doesn’t mean there’s nothing for the 2-13 Colts to play for Sunday at Jacksonville, or no significant compensation waiting at the finish line. The most intriguing and arguably franchise-shaping reward: the No. 1 pick in the April draft. The Colts are guaranteed no worse than the No. 2 overall pick but secure the top selection with a loss to the 4-11 Jaguars. They also will sit No. 1 in the pecking order with a third straight win providing the Rams upset the San Francisco 49ers in St. Louis. The Colts hold the tiebreaker with St. Louis, having played the easier 2011 schedule. Coach Jim Caldwell is aware of what’s on the line but isn’t interested in losing now to help later. “My job is to win ballgames, plain and simple,” he said Monday. Among personal milestones within reach Sunday are an eighth consecutive 1,000-yard season for wide receiver Reggie Wayne and a first for sidekick Pierre Garcon. Wayne needs 113 yards to tie Marvin Harrison’s club record and become just the sixth player in NFL history with at least eight straight 1,000-yard seasons. Garcon leads the Colts with 68 receptions for 925 yards, both career bests.

Jacksonville (4-11, 3-4 H) lost to Tennessee 17-23, on the road, in Week 16. RB Maurice Jones-Drew, the NFL’s rushing leader with 1,334 yards coming into the game, ran for 103 yards and a touchdown for the Jaguars. He has a career-high 1,437 yards this season.

Jacksonville also is jockeying for draft position. The Jaguars are tied with Cleveland and Tampa Bay for the league’s fourth-worst record. Depending on how the final weekend shakes out, they could draft as high as No. 4 or drop to No. 8. Also, consider the Jaguars’ motivation. By winning Sunday, they provide the Colts the opportunity to draft Stanford’s Andrew Luck, which means the possibility of delivering another top-tier quarterback prospect to the Colts and the AFC South.
