Jack Del Rio and the entire Jacksonville Jaguars team have a bad taste in their mouths after getting schlacked 28-3 in the AFC Wild Card Game last year. Del Rio should be proud of his team for making the playoffs though. The Jaguars should challenge The Indianapolis Colts for the AFC South division title in 2006. Del Rio will have to do it this year without star wide receiver Jimmy Smith. Smith retired in the off season.
Byron Leftwich will be the starting quarterback for Jacksonville. Leftwich had a 57.9 completion percentage and threw for 2,193 yards and 15 touchdowns. Bryon is coming off a late season broken ankle so we will see if he can regain his 2005 form. Greg Jones and Fred Taylor will see time at running back, but expect Maurice Drew from UCLA to compete for some reps. Reggie Williams and Matt Jones should get more playing time with Smith’s departure.
Del Rio chose to beef up his Jaguars defense via the free agent market in the off season. Del Rio grabbed Nick Greison to fill Akin Ayodele’s spot. Jacksonville has returning defensive ends Marcus Stroud and John Henderson to clog up the middle. The Jaguars were tied for 3rd in total sacks in the 2005 NFL season. The Jacksonville Jaguars defense will be a bright spot for the team in 2006.
