Jacksonville Jaguars vs Tennessee Titans Spread 2011 NFL Picks Week 16

by Scott Burgess on Tuesday, December 20th, 2011

The Jacksonville Jaguars head into Tennessee to take on the Titans, Saturday Dec 24th, as both teams have nothing to play for but pride, but the Titans could make it if they win out in the final weeks and get help to snatch the AFC’s final wild-card berth. NFL oddsmakers have the Titans as -7 point home favorites over the Jaguars with the over/under set at 40 points. Jacksonville (4-10, 1-6 V) lost badly to Atlanta, 14-41, on the road, in Week 15. This one was over by halftime. The Falcons were up 27-0 at the break, the shell-shocked Jaguars saddled with a net passing total of minus-1 yard. Jacksonville rookie QB Blaine Gabbert coughed up the ball twice, both turnovers leading to Atlanta scores. Defensive tackle Corey Peters scooped up the second fumble and ran it in for a touchdown early in the third quarter, ending any thought of a Jacksonville comeback.

The Jaguars’ offense ranks lowest in the league for total yards (256.3ypg) and passing yards (137.2ypg), while its defense remains a top-five squad in allowed yards overall (307.4ypg) and against the pass (196.9ypg). Tennessee’s scoring has dropped to 15ppg in its last two weeks of action, while its defense has given up 19.9ppg all season, ranking the Titans eighth in the league.  Jacksonville was lit up last week by Atlanta’s attack, but I feel it can be excused with the matchup taking place in a dome. The Jaguars have allowed a stingy 17.8ppg in its four road games on grass

Tennessee (7-7, 4-3 H) handed the Colts their first win by losing 13-27, on the road, in Week 15. The loss dealt a serious blow to the Titans’ playoff hopes. QB Matt Hasselbeck was picked off twice, and RB Chris Johnson rushed for just 55 yards for Tennessee.

Rookie QB Jake Locker has played well in recent weeks, the Titans will continue to start veteran Matt Hasselbeck, who continues to cope with a strained calf. “We’re still in the playoff hunt, and he’s the quarterback that got us there,” Tennessee coach Mike Munchak said Monday. “I think that’s what you have to go with the guy who has the experience, the guy that’s been in playoff situations, the guy that’s been in the Super Bowl. After what he’s meant to us this year and how well he has played throughout the season for us that I think we have to give him the opportunity to finish the job.” Hasselbeck was injured in Week 14 and struggled Sunday when the Titans became the first team in 2011 to lose to the Colts. Locker, the eighth pick of the draft, has passed for 390 yards and two TDs the past two weeks in relief of his mentor.
