LaDainian Tomlinson, the record setting running back for the San Diego Chargers was named the Associated Press NFL Most Valuable Player today (Jan.4). Tomlinson led the Chargers to an AFC Western Division Championship and a 14-2 record this season. The Chargers were also installed as favorites team to win the Super Bowl.

This season, Tomlinson set an NFL record by scoring 19 touchdowns in a span of six games, including a franchise record 4 touchdowns in games against the San Francisco 49ers, Cincinnati Bengals and the Denver Broncos. He is the first to score three touchdowns in three straight games, and the first to have three games of four or more touchdowns in one season. Tomlinson became the fastest player ever to score 100 touchdowns.
On Nov. 19, Tomlinson accomplished the milestone in 89 games with 102, beating the previous record of 93 games held by Jim Brown and Emmitt Smith. On Dec. 3, Tomlinson became only the second running back to rush for at least 1,200 yards in his first six NFL seasons. Then on Dec. 7, he was named the AFC Offensive Player of the Month.

Tomlinson broke Shaun Alexander’s 2005 record of 28 touchdowns in a season by scoring his 29th against the Broncos. He accomplished this feat in only 13 games. It took Alexander 16 games to accomplish the same feat in 2005. Tomlinson also threw for two touchdown passes this season.
With the first touchdown against the Kansas City Chiefs on Dec. 17, Tomlinson surpassed Paul Hornung’s record of 176 points for the Green Bay Packers in 1960, for most points in a season by an NFL player.
Tomlinson secured 44 or 50 first place votes for the MVP award. Former teammate Drew Brees of the New Orleans Saints was second with four first place votes.
