New Orleans Saints 2006 NFC South Preview

The New Orleans Saints went with first year head coach Sean Payton to lead the team in the post Katrina Era.  Lucky for Payton, the post Katrina Era will include Reggie Bush in it.  Besides Bush, the New Orleans Saints will have Drew Brees as their quarterback.  With Bush in the backfield, the Saints won’t have to rely on the passing game as much as they did in past years.

Drew Brees signed with the New Orleans Saints in the off season.  Brees is overcoming a injury to his shoulder and has looked sharp in the pre season.  While playing for the San Diego Chargers last season, Brees racked up 3,576 yards and 24 touchdowns.  Reggie Bush will be one of the featured running backs for the Saints.  Bush is widely considered to be the most exciting player in the NFL and he has not even touched the ball in a  NFL game yet.  Bush helped lead the USC Trojans to a National Championship 2 years ago.  Deuce McAllister will be the work horse running back for New Orleans.  Deuce was hampered with injuries in 2005 and only ran for 335 yards last season.  Donte Stallworth and Joe Horn will be the starting wide receivers that Brees will be looking to get the ball to in New Orleans.

The New Orleans defensive was in need of some repair this season.  In 2005, the Saints gave up 25 points per game and were ranked 27th against the rush.  Payton picked up a ton of free agents in the off season such as Bryan Scott, Anthony Simmons, Hollis Thomas, Scott Fujita and Omar Stoutmire.  The Saints should improve over the short term with these players however will need to find a more permanently solution beyond 2006.
