New York (11-7, 6-3 V) beat the Green Bay Packers 37-20, on the road, and face the San Francisco 49ers for the NFC Conference Championship. The Giants defense forced four turnovers from the NFL’s top-scoring team, recovering three fumbles and making an interception. Behind a revitalized defense, the New York Giants have become a complete team and a force to be reckoned with in the NFL playoffs. The Giants relied on a potent passing attack to squeeze into the postseason, but with the return from injury of DE Osi Umenyiora and his point-stopping colleagues, the Giants are firing on all cylinders and one win away from the Super Bowl.
You have to give Giants defensive coordinator Perry Fewell a lot of credit. His defense gave up only 34 offensive points in the last three games against the Cowboys, Falcons and Packers. Those are the NFL’s 11th, 10th and third-ranked offenses.
Over the last three games, QB Eli Manning, has gone 68-for-98 for 953 yards, nine touchdowns and one measly pick. That’s a 126.8 aggregate passer rating. Eli Manning has had this offense firing on all cylinders in their first two playoff games. They put up 61 points in those 2 games and Manning has 3 passing TDs in each victory. Although most of the attention has been focused on the emergence of Victor Cruz, it’s been his fellow WR Hakeem Nicks that has dominated in the first 2 rounds. He had 115 yards and 2 TDs against Atlanta and then went for 165 yards and 2 TDs in Green Bay. Nicks has seen a team-high 9 passes come his way in each of the first 2 games and will again be Manning’s #1 option in the passing game. Cruz is a big play threat (remember the 99 yard catch against the Jets?), Manningham is a very capable 3rd WR (TD in each of the first 2 rounds), and TE Jake Ballard also will get some looks from Manning who does a good job of spreading the ball around and taking what the defense gives him.
The running game of the Giants was dreadful at times this year, but has looked better in the playoffs. They had 172 yards against Atlanta and 95 yards last week against the Pack both above their season average of just 89 yards which ranked last in the NFL. Ahmad Bradshaw and Brandon Jacobs have almost evenly split time and carries in the backfield with Bradshaw getting slightly more work in the passing game.
These teams met in the regular season, with the Niners taking the win 27-20 after a 4th quarter touchdown pass to Vernon Davis (sound familiar) and a late defensive stand to stop Eli’s comeback bid.

The Bottom Line: If they get past the Niners they’ll want the Ravens. Against the Patriots if their defense can hit Tom Brady hard they can win the 2012 Super Bowl.
